Folks,

Are there any manufacturers out there that sell 20 ga. single shot youth
models? Winchester at one time did, but I guess they don't any more.
Walmart and Dicks Sporting Goods sell one. I believe it is a New
England Firearms model, but I could be mistaken. I'll probably get that
one, but was wondering if there were other companies to choose from.

Thanks,

Bill

For a single shot/ break action shotgun, those NEF shotguns (or other
cobranded models - most come off the same line) available at KMART/ WALMART/
etc are ubiquitous. I thought everyone had at least one of those lurking in
the corner of the gun cabinet. I still have the .410 that my father bought
almost 30 years ago when I was 10 (haven't shot it in years.) They are very
simple/ very reliable/ and relatively inexpensive.

Bill,
If you are thinking to purchase a light recoiling, first gun, for a youth or
small framed female, do not buy a 20ga single barrel, youth model. The
recoil of a 20ga youth model is ferocious. The manufacturers cut the weight
down to the point that the guns just hammer the small framed, light weight,
shooter.

My son was the recipient of such a gift. When he refused to shoot his gun
and asked to use my Browning A5 12 ga. every time we went afield. I took his
20 out and shot it myself............. the 20 was just awful. Dad was real
embarrassed, should have known better.

Might I suggest an auto , like the Remington 1100 in 20. ga.. or at least a
pump gun. The weight will really help. If you must get a single barrel, drop
back to the 410.
Good Luck,
Bandit

Mossberg makes a 500m pump in a Bantam model in 20ga. It has a plug in the
magazine so its only a single shot unless the plug is removed. Also it has a
short stock AND forearm, unlike the Remington 870 that just offers a short
stock for their youth model. Mossberg also encloses a half price coupon in
the box. It gives you a half price deal on a regular size stock and forearm
when the kid outgrows the gun. You can also add spacers as the kid grows in
the mean time. My son is 10 and is shooting trap rather well with it. They
only come in a 22" barrel, but with removable chokes. My son shoots his with
the modified choke and is scoring well with that setup.

hope that helps.

NEF is the only US made single shot that i'm aware of. I own 2 and they
are great guns for their intended purpose. Rossi of Brazil also has a
single avalabile.

If you might be interested in a used one ... my son has outgrown
his Harrington and Richards gun. It is a "combo" ... has
a 20 ga barrel, .410 barrel, .22 Rem Jet, and a .30-30 barrel for
it. Also have a variety of brass, loading dies and some loaded
bullets for it .

Drop me a line if your interested ... I can send you a complete list
of the stuff ...

It's not new ... but its in reasonably good shape and hasn't been
fired to death (but then that's a little more work with a single shot ... :-)
