For our two rifles (see " Varmint rifles for deer hunting "), we look
at the Bausch & Lomb Elite 3000 3x-9x 50mm.

A salesman (<g>) said to us that the Elite 3000 was not very good
(bad aftermarket services with B&L, Leupold is stronger and easy to
sight, etc.) and he suggested the Leupold Vari-X II 3x-9x 40mm.

There is 200$Can between the B&L and Leupold.

I would like to know if the Elite 3000 is a good scope for
hunting and target shooting? (I know that the Leupold is better, but
don't want to spend another 400$ (2 scopes) if the E3000 is good)

Thanks,
Jonathan

Jonathan:

I own an Elite 3000 2x-7x and an Elite 4000 2.5x-10x. I also own a
Leupold Vari-X III 1.5x to 5x and until I recently sold it, a VariX III
6.5x to 20x.

They are all good scopes and I have been pleased with all of them. I do
not like the Leupold Vari-X II because it does not have click
adjustments. As far as clarity and durability are concerned, I think
the Elites are just as good as the comparable Leupolds.

FWIW, Terry Wieland (also a Canadian),one of the contributing writers to
Peterson's Rifle Shooter, uses the Elite scopes and he swears by them.

John,
I had the Leupold Vari-x II in 2 to 7 X on my Remington 742 carbine for
quite a few years. I would have preferred a 1.5x to 4.5x instead. But I got
it new for a good price from a guy who decided to quit hunting and needed
the money. My rifle got stolen and when I came time to get a new rifle and
telescope, the salesman did not have any more Leupold scopes. It was close
to hunting season and I couldn't wait, so he offered to put a Bausch and
Lomb Elite 4000 in 1.5x to 6.5x on my new Remington 700 in 7mm Rem Mag. He
said that if I did not like it, he would take it back.
I found it just as good as the Leupold. The distance between the eye and
scope is just as good, (I forget the name for this) but there is a touch
more leeway in the Leupold, I think. But since my rifle has a Monte Carlo
stock, this no longer really matters because my eye lines up quickly and at
the same distance every time. The Remington 742 Carbine did not have a Monte
Carlo stock. I have been shooting Federal Premium, Nosler Partition in the
rifle and even changing the magnification does not change the point of aim.
So, I would say that it is a toss-up between the 2 companies. The Bausch and
Lomb seems to have a bit more clarity but this is surely due to the slightly
larger lenses. Also, I have the Bausch and Lomb Elite 4000. I don't know how
the Elite 4000 compares to the Elite 3000 in price and quality. One thing
for sure, the Bausch and Lomb is a lot easier to adjust. The crosshairs seem
identical between the 2 makes. And I am sure the guarantee is identical too.
I hope I helped a little. However, there are some on this newsgroup who are
experts.

I have recently bought several Baush and Lomb Elites. I looked at the
Leopolds which were only $50+ more. I went with the B&L because they
cost less. But if I had more $ I would buy the Leopolds they are brighter
and made here in the US. Next time it will be Leopold
