I understand that you usually shoot the more open choke first on an
over/under shotgun, but which is supposed to be the more open barrel, the
top or the bottom. Does it make a difference or not ?

It depends which way the game is coming, too you, or away from you. My
Franchi double over/umder
has an improved/cylinder & modified choke. On over/under shotguns, the
more open choke is usually the bottom and the more tighter or more
closed choke is usually the top.
I don't think it would make a big difference since you have a barrel
selection on your safey for which
barrel you want to use first.

Take care everyone.

Yes it does.

I have a Beretta 686 w/screw-in chokes. I always put the more open
choke in the bottom barrel.

The theory is that the bottom barrel is fired first ... which has
"straight line" recoil (less muzzle jump), therefore it allows for a
quicker recovery for acquisition of the second target.

I've tried it both ways ... I like shooting the bottom barrel first.

Yes the bottom barrel tends to push straight back on recoil while the top
barrel tends to push the gun up on recoil. You want the bottom barrel to fire
first make for better shot recovery.

The only reason I have heard about which barrel first is the bottom one as that
will cut down on muzzle jump and put you on the second bird faster. Can't prove
it by me though. Can't day that I have noticed any difference
