CINCINNATI 幽ow to control a ballooning deer population in Clifton
parks became a heated topic of debate at the Clifton Town Meeting's
hearing Monday night.
.
The Cincinnati Park Board has a culling program that involves closing
the park to the public and allowing trained bow hunters to kill deer.
The culling program was proposed for Mt. Storm Park and two others in
Clifton, but some residents were outraged.

The Park Board has since allowed the Clifton community the chance to
come up with other ideas to control the ballooning deer population.

At the Clifton Town Meeting, members voted to send two different ideas
to the Park Board and then to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources
for approval.

One proposal calls for deer to be injected with birth control, which
could cost anywhere from $20 to $300 per deer. The other plan would
involve sterilizing female deer, which could cost $1,000 each.

"It's a procedure. It痴 an operative procedure. It's tranquilizing and
then they have a little mobile hospital unit somewhere. They do the
procedure, it's an ovarianectomy," explained Kevin Marsh, Secretary of
the Clifton Town Meeting.

"We want to continue to see these lovely animals in these Clifton
parks and we want to see them living out their lives in a natural way
with occasional mating with some fawns," contraceptive method advocate
Kathryn Gutcwiller said.

The Park Board has asked that the proposals be in place by June for
their consideration. Both non-lethal options would require private
funding. Currently no one has raised the money needed for either,
Marsh said.

Experts said the deer population in Clifton isn't at the critical
stage just yet, so there is time to consider all of the options.

This is how the general, non-hunting public thinks:
