I need some info on what you can use to draw whitetail deer to a
certain area besides commercial lures. Someone once told me that if you
dig a hole & pour a pound of salt, a pound of sugar, & then pour 2 two
liter cokes over the covered up hole deer will tear the ground up. Also
heard peanut butter on a tree will do the trick also. Anyone know any
other good ones?

OK, way off topic I guess, but what would a person use to repel Deer?
They are walking up in my yard numbers and even eating my foundation
plants. We can see them over the TV as we watch and shoo them off then,
but first thing in the AM we (in bed) hear their feet on the flagstones
as they brouse the front of the house. They must know where and when it
is legal to hunt! My wife is furious as a lot of money has been lost so
far. Perhaps it is on target a little as it will be advice of what to
avoid doing or smelling like on a hunt for deer :-) Ideas?

I have noticed that on most of the commercial deer attractors the main
ingredient is sodium carbonate. I tried to find a generic (cheap)
source for it but haven't had any luck. I am told that "Washing Soda"
is sodium carbonate and is cheap but so far haven't been able to find
any in the supermarkets in my area of Missouri. Your ideas
(salt/sugar/coke and peanut butter) are interesting. I'll give them a
try!

Try a drug store or a hardware store.

Does anyone know of any good setups & ingredients to make, build, etc.
to attract whitetail deer to treestands? (ie.-salt,peanut butter, sugar,
& etc.) Or how to make a homemade feeder?

Compare the chemical [ingredients] analysis of deer attractants such as
Deer Cocaine to Morton Trace Minerals. You find out it's about the same
composition. A 50 pound bag cost $4.99 at Quality Farm and Fleet. Other
farm stores or grain elevators carry it too.

I didn't think that sodium carbonate would attract deer. The use of
sodium carbonate, like sodium bicarbonate, is to absorb human and other
odors so that the deer don't smell anything.

If you cant find sodium carbonate (washing soda, usually in the big
yellow box at the grocery store in the laundry section) use Arm and
Hammer Baking soda, Sodium bicarbonate, in the bright yellow box in the
baking and spice aisle in the grocery store, or the even bigger yellow
box in the laundry dept. Just make sure it is baking soda, not
detergent.

My humble advice is always, well you wanted to be closer to nature, welcome
to it. After all, the deer were there first, it is sorta there turf, what
has not been destroed by development.

By the way, have you tried feeding them? Make a feeding area out back
where there is good stuff for them to eat, maybe they won't be so inclined
to eat your plants. Kind of like giving back. Also don't replant with the
same type of plant they ate, you may find a type of plant that they won't eat.

Most of all, enjoy them! I wish that I could look out my window and see deer!

Be careful of what you wish for, you may get it, then they'll eat your

I believe hand soap works pretty well. Try shredding some Ivory or
Dove or what ever arround what it is you want to protect, or if it's
a tree, try hanging a bar in the branches waist high or so.

The means is greater than the end, and every good hunter

One thing that does work for quite some time but is not, in my opinion,
ecologically sound is fuel oil (diesel fuel). I believe this has such a
strong scent that the olfactory senses of the deer are overwhelmed. Not
being able to scent danger they avoid the area.

The cure damage is worse than the deer damage too. She wants to protect
her flowers and other plants and the fuel will poison the soil and
perhaps kill everything.

Country folk use "Dried Blood" made from beef blood. Deer HATE the
stuff,
because it taints their veggies, so they taint gonna eat em' if they are
covered with it :-)

Most rural hardware stores sell the stuff, in a 5 pound bag.
