#The new recommendations for eating red meat that just came out sort of
#worries me. No more than about 4 oz. per day or about 18 oz. a
#week?????
Does the study or whatever the recommendation came from even mention venison.
Most of the time these guidelines are just for people who are buying and eating
domesticated beef or pork.

When I had my heart attack, a dietician came in to talk with me about my
diet. When I told her that I ate more venison than beef, she said that was
very good for my health. She told me that venison has far less fat and
cholesterol than beef and is comparable to skinless/boneless chicken.

I'm struggling with this myself. I had stents back in Feb. for angina
and a 90 percent blocked coronary artery. Heart healthy diet says less
red meat than that although Lipitor has dropped my cholesterol in half.
I'm going to bring this up with my cardiologist when I see her next
month. Heart healthy diet not only limits meats, but also fat, salt,
caffeine and alcohol.
Talking to younger neighbor, trick or treating with kids the other
night. He had angioplasty 12 years ago and stents more recently for
reblocked coronary arteries. He's a professional ballroom dancer and was
competing at the time on low fat diet and his cholesterol was only 100
when he developed angina which shows genetics pays a big role in this.
Last batch of venison chili, I made by browning meat in microwave and
only used a bit of olive oil to brown onions and green pepper. It was
great.
Also reminds me of guy that caught a record tuna off the Delaware coast.
It weighed several hundred pounds. If he went by the government
guidelines for fish containing mercury, his family will take generations
to consume the tuna.

Thanks for sharing that information. We too eat way more venison than
beef. I feel alot better now!

Today, dieticians state that meat protein is meat protein...Chicken it seems
isn't so good for us after all. A healthy diet limits all meat to a "fist"
sized portion.
No, wild game meat was not mentioned so I probably overreacted just a
bit. Sorry.
Steve
Venison is better for you than chicken. Don't worry about it.

Steve,
Hello and congratulations on getting your show off the ground. I might one
day be able to find a channel that carries it. As for me as well, I too had a dietician
talk to me about my diet while recuperating from a heart attack. And this dude
highly recommended the venison being on my diet. And then he about freaked out
when I told him I was actually deer hunting when I had the attack. Anyway, given a
choice of beef or venison, I will take the latter of the two always. Again congrats on your
show and have fun.

I've been eating plenty of red meat for most of my life. I much prefer
game meat like elk, venison, caribou or reindeer, bear, wild boar and
wart hog plus the gamut of african game. I recently got a very high
reading of cholesteral and I suspect from the fast food I eat on the
run for work. I gave up the fast food and am paying more attention to
my general diet but I still eat a juicky rare ribeye steak once in a
while and even the occasional 80/20 hamburger.
I still don't get much physical activity aside from walking across the
flight line (I'm a a professional pilot) many times a day or teaching
my classes in Aikido and my health is pretty damned good for a 71 year
old........
May I say many studies have shown wild game to be much lower in
cholesterol than domestic meat. One of my favorites here on the gulf
coast is raw oysters and they go off the chart in cholesterol so I cut
back on them.....snivel snivel....
I firmly believe many of the "studies" are skewed or tainted by
whomever contracted for them and personal bias on the part of the
researcher. So, common sense and a reasonable diet plus exercise seems
to be the key. Most people figure I'm in late 50's and fit.

Ron,
You and your friends need to contact your local cable or satellite provider
and pester them to add The Sportsman Channel to their lineup. If enough
people let them know about the channel and their desire to watch it, it will
be added. That's what happened in my area and now it's part of Charter
Digital's Sports Package.
Otherwise, the other way you can watch it is via high speed internet. For
$4.95 a month (first month free) you can watch the entire program lineup on
your computer. Just go to http://www.thesportsmanchannel.com and sign up.
