I went hunting in Alaska for Caribou in 1990 on a do it yourself hunt. Two
of the people with me had hunted prior to that with Club Chambeaux. They were
very unfortunate when they went, since the caribou were apparently not
migrating through that area at the time. They mentioned that hunters had
to "fight" over the few small bulls that they did see & they only got one
of these small bulls between them (as I remember the story).
In Alaska we hunted the Mulchatna herd & they mentioned that there was no
comparison. We saw anywhere from 100 to 1000 caribou a day. We all shot
very nice bulls. It's just a matter of how good you are at holding your
trigger finger until a real trophy is in range.
I guess my point is, hunting is a hit or miss game. You could go to these
two places this year & the opposite could happen!

Details: We drove up to Montreal, flew up to Schefferville on charter
(VNQ - Voyages Nouvelle Quebec) turboprop that many of the outfitter
use. Parking was in a "secured" guarded lot, tho they duid say pull
battery or distributor wire. Flight about 2.5 hrs front of plane holds
baggage in cargo nets on either side of aisle. Bunked overnight in
Schefferville then flew the "Otter" up to camp. Club Chambeaux boasts a
1.92% rate since 1984, they own (16) some odd planes and fly people from
one camp to another if herd is not there. Camp we were booked in
further north had the herd pass thru 3 weeks earlier, nothing since.
Camp we were sent to had them coming on either side. Good
accomodations, (6) per tent/bunkhouse, good food. We went american
plan. There were 2 indor toilets and showers (with hot water). Weather
varied, day we arrived I was walking around in a tee shirt, two days
later it was pile on all you had with you. Cold, rainy windy, show
showers.. We had an excellent guide who helped us pick the bulls and
moved us through woods for good shots, other guides.. well like
everything in life, varies. The camp was overloaded since it was the
only active american plan camp at the time. They have about 20 camps at
the moment. Everyone filled their tags (2 each) in 2-3 days. One
person in our tent came back early Monday when it was so misearble, took
off all his stuff, started to put his gun away when someone called out
that there were 3 bulls crossing about 2-300 yds down from camp. He
picked up his stuff, trotted off and five minutes later got his second
;-> Where my wife and I were sitting we had a group of 60-70 cows and
calves cross directly at us... we moved out of the way and watched them
almost a stones (or arrow shot) throw away. To make room from people
from another camp that was dry a group of us volunteered to move to
another camp up north. Food there was *fantastic*, weather clearer,
spent time there fishing. Went to base of the Canipesceu (sp?) falls
(wher the herd got washed over a few years ago) what a sight. We were
in camps for a week, Guides take off front and hind qtrs, back straps,
all hangs in a mat house, they clean teh antlers, box up meat (3 box's
per person about 75 lbs each), all is brought back to Schefferville then
down to Montreal with you. Some of the people in our camp had not been
able to see/get anything last year so they got $1,300 off trip this
year. Cost is roughly $3,500 pp American, European is cheaper, If you
pay in advance you get a break on the Can-US currency conversion. For
