I am most interested to know if the good old 30-30 is a rifle worth using
anywhere in Montana.

I have been making plans to move there--Yellowstone County area, maybe-- and I
need to know if I do the hunting I wish with it.

Also, if not that one, is the 444 Marlin acceptable?

The game I am after is deer, and I know that whitetails are moving in, elk,
maybe antelope, and other small game.

If you choose, and remember I am a lever-nut, which caliber(s) would do?

If you have a problem, it won't be the power of the cartridge but the
range it's useful to. Montana can't be that different than eastern
Oregon. You could have a lot of fun skulking belly down in the dirt
sneaking up on critters and get some bonus style points.

Given the more open country, the smart move would be going to something
shooting .270, .30-'06, or 7mm mag. That means Browning BLR if you have
to shoot a lever action. It is a heavy rifle, and because of that
weight, the one I shot a few years ago had the least recoil I ever saw
from a 7mm mag. It also shot VERY well ... sub MOA with factory ammo.
The trigger was not impressive though. More like aweful.

You could, if you wished to hamper yourself with a short action
cartridge, look for a Savage 99 in .308 or .243 or a BLR in either of
those or the 7mm-08. Or an old .358 if you can find one.

After shooting that 7mm mag BLR and seeing it's accuracy, if I had to
pick a lever action, I'd take that one in a heartbeat. No hesitation
whatsoever.

Keep both of them.
If you trade them off, you'll kick yourself later.
If you get to 'Tana and want something else, buy it.
You may want a longer range caliber in the East.

"Anywhere" covers a lot of territory. I'm sure that somewhere in
the state of Montana, the .30-30 will do the job if you do yours.

Probably even better on the bigger species, such as black bear
and elk in timber, but again it's up to you to find the place where
game will be in effective range.

Look for a good used Savage 99 if you just have to have a lever.
Good cartridges are the .358, .308, and .284 Winchester, the
.300 Savage, and maybe the .250-3000 Savage and .243
Winchester. Browning also makes a lever action, but its looks
leave me cold. (What can I say? I married my wife because
I thought she was pretty, which may make me shallow, but we've
been happy together since 1971.)

I just moved from Montana, in the Rosebud County area in Forsyth.
The terrain from Miles City, to Billings is pretty much the same,
hilly, with dry creek beds. Since hunting is broken into regions,
and alot of Block Management will probably be used the first year
that you hunt until you know some folks, the area around Hysham,
Forsyth, Mile city and the Powder River will be good bets. Last
year I took a beautiful Mulie with a .243 by crawling through the
sage and taking him in a dry creek bed on Thanksgiving. Alot of
sage, russian olive, and what the locals call "greasy-grass" can
grow quite tall, and shots are relatively close. If you chose to
antelope hunt as well, remeber that the pronghorns will be rutting
at the time of season, and I have found that if you kneel down and
place you hands along you head like horns, they will come a runnin
to see what the hell you are.....real close......30/30 close.
There is a waiting period of six months to become an official resident
for any hunting. Incidentally, the goose hunting was fabulous last year
in Rosebud , which I think is all part of Unit 7, under Miles City
Game Fish and Parks. If you like the .30/30, and don't mind not parking
the damn truck and leaning out to take a 600 yard shot with a 22-250,
then by all means use it. Hell, if archery hunters get within 20 yards
so can we....right? GOOD LUCK!

lessee, you want a newbie resident to go out in the field, crouch
down, fake antlers with his hands, and wait for the antelope to
arrive... hmm, sounds like a "snipe hunt" to me! ;)
