Start reloading the 375WIN, the initial cost may be fairly high when you
consider the Press scales dies cases etc. But in the long term (depending
on how much you shoot) it will pay itself off many times over.
The 45/70 you list is the most potent of all the calibers that you list
for elk. This was originally a black powder round (and can still be
loaded with it), that has made the transition to smokeless quite
"recently". I shoot a Marlin 1895SS in this caliber and I am still in the
process of working up loads for it. But with a 400gn bullet you can get
around 2000f.p.s *if* you have the right gun/powder combo. This sort of
load is good for around 200yds on an elk sized animal. It will kill it
past this point but the trajectory is quite "arched". Bullets range from
300gn to 500gn (commercially available). The 300's can be driven to
better than 2100 f.p.s and are fine for smaller game (smaller than elk).
If you shoot deer sized game (around 200lb) with the 300gn HP bullets, you
will literally blow them off their feet. The big .45 is really emphatic
on the smaller critters. The 350gn Hornady through 500gn Hornady will
usually drill through the largest animal you point it at.
Good luck with your choice.

The 30/30 is not worthless on Elk it has killed more Elk and Deer than any
other cart, with 150 gr bullets it will do 2x more than the 44 mag and
will take deer and elk to 150+ yrds. In the carbine Contender you can use
SPBT bullets and they shoot better at 100+yrd. I would not pass on a 200
yrd shoulder shoot on a bull Elk with the right load in a Contender. The
45/70 is a good Elk load many of Elk have been taken with it in both
pistol and carbine Contenders. Elmer Keith killed an Elk at 500+yrd with a
44 Mag, I dont think it should be done everyday but it just shows you one
good shoot is all it takes.

Elmer Keith killed a elk at 500 yards?, and I shot the balls off an ant
at 50yards with a BB gun. A quick check of my ballistics table tells me
at 500 yards, a 200 gr. 44mag (rifle) sighted in at 100 yards will be
screeming in at 786 ft/sec., packing a whopping 274 ft-lbs of energy,
after having dropped 243 inches (20 feet) in trajectory. Statements
like those of CH only encourage the wasting of ammunition and, worse,
the needless wounding of game animals.

Well John
I don't care what your paper ballistics say the fact is Elmer did it, and
it is in his book "Hell I Was There" This also was collaborated by a
friend of his. So You can call anyone what ever you want, I for one
beleive every word. Now as for Elk and 30/30s I killed well over 20
elk, including cows and several Bullls, 4X4 or larger. Over six of these
including a 5X5 was killed with 30/30 150 gr FP bullets or 170 gr RN, from
50 yrd to over 150yrd all were clean kills with out Magnum anything. The
fact is a 250 gr Keith bullet, that he shoot, at 600-700 ft/sec will in
fact penetrate very well. I did not say everyone should try this I just
used it as a REAL LIFE example that every animal in North America need not
be Magnarized to be cleanly taken. I have not hunted with a cart that will
over 2500ft/sec in years and have never lose or wounded any animals. To
each his on.
