Hi Guys.

Upon talking to my farmer-friend he has told me he will be putting a
dead cow in one of his fields this weekend. I plan on giving it a few
days for the coyotes to find and then setup on it. I was wondering when
the best time to expect the coyotes to be there... at first light? Or
anytime all day long?

I'm hoping this will be a good time if I can time it right.

It takes a couple of days before they start to eat it, In another day it
could be gone! A friend of mine hunts this way quite often and there are
cows they won't touch, ever. He's not really sure why

Stef,
If you want the coyotes dead, put the dead cow in like a corner of the
field next to where two fence meet at a 90 degree angle. Look for trails
where the coyotes go under the fence. If it's still real green where you're
at you can spot these easy. At these trails, put snares there. Tie one to
top stran of fence and loop it down to where they are coming and sticking
there head through the grass and sliding under the fence. Place the loop
there. Our loops are made out of thin but tough cable. Place several of
these on the most used trails. I promise, if dine right you can rid
yourself of 4-5 coyotes. Just be sure and check the snares at first light
or bfore. The coyotes are content, until they realize the sun is coming up.
(We use this tech. due to the over abundance here in Miss. due to the
coyotes killing calves and raiding watermelon patches and chicken houses)
If just for sport, put up a lean-to tree stand clsoe by and use a
shotgun
on a moon lit night. Use some fox cover scent too. I've killed coyotes
before like this, but you never know how long you'll have to wait.
Good, good luck,
Cotton

I agree with Jim, I have killed many coyotes off dead cows on our farm. The
best time to get them is a first light. The thing you need to remember is
that the coyotes will be there all night long, so you don't want to spook
them when you take your stand. We put the bait 400 yards from our house and
then shoot out the shop window. This is a good setup with my mom killing
lots of coyotes herself. Most of the time there will be more than coyote on
the bait, so consider getting all of them before you start shooting. A gun
shy coyote is really hard to kill and he makes sure any others that join
him are wily too. The optimum is to have the weather keep the carcass
frozen, so it lasts longer and they have to spend more time to get a belly
full. Either way it is a great way to get coyotes. Have fun and let us know
how it went.

You have fell in a gold mine...open up the cows chest cavity to get the
smell of death... Hopefully, the farmer will set the cow up so that you
can get a good set up. We have done this three times with outstanding
results... Try to find out where the coyotes staging is before they
come out in the field/hunt. Put the cow a hundred yard out front of
that area.

If you can kill at 400 yards this is the min without having to really be
still etc. Mornings and evenings are good we have even killed them
while working on fences around the farm.
