MD has a lot of hunting opportunities,
I just got back from DNR in Annapolis (Fri) and got there "public hunting
booklet for 2000".
Lots of small out of the way hunting area's, and I have found that after
opening day (shotgun), the public woods are not to bad.
I have hunted many of the public hunting in MD and found it best to,
Squirrel hunt in Oct. to check the places out, find out of the way setups,
and take 1/2 (or 1/4) days off work (come in @ noon) and hunt these during
the week, and mix in a full day off work here and there, and usually hunt
private land on Sat.
I have also had good luck advertising in the paper to find private land, it
may be a little late this year for deer season, but even at that I will
choose to go back to some of My favorite public lands during the week days.
Stop by or call DNR and get the book, advertise in the paper (farmers love
to have You shoot ground hogs in the summer, and that gets You a in for deer
season).
I have not had 1 lead from being a member of a gun club, (except for offers
for over priced top dollar leases)
I have not paid a cent for access to hunting land in MD, I have spent many
enjoyable hours driving around scouting and hunting public lands, I have
helped with home repairs, painted, etc.
It takes a few years to build up good contacts, but if You are sincere,
clean, respectful and helpful, The land owners will usually CALL YOU, but
remember, it takes time to build these relationships.
Good luck,
Nick
