have a .22lr that holds abit over MOA. is this an acceptable weapon for
groundhogs around the 15 pound range? (assume using a hollowpoint) distance
will probably be around 50 yards, maybe a bit more.

If the shot placement is good (head or heart) you can stop em cold. My son took
one at 120 yds with a .22 single shot Marlin/ Bushnell 3-9x scope. Heart shot
dropped him cold.

If your shot isn't in the kill zone, you may just wound them. I happen to like
a larger faster bullet for eliminating these pests.

If it's not enough, there are thousands of people who are very wrong then.
That's all we ever used when we were younger.

and I didn't re-post your original message so that means no little Emily
post note for me.

A bit light for my liking...'chucks are tough.

I'd prefer a .22 Hornet at minimun. I have killed 'chucks with a .22LR, but it
was dicey.

thanks. thats.. what i was thinking. head shots shouldnt be too
difficult.. but i shall continue looking for a pistol cartridge carbine
or a .22 Mag at a pawn shop then. my .223 won't be in till xmas, and i
need a bit of enjoyment before then.

I have shot a number of ground hogs with 22LR. The only reservation I have is
that they don't die as neatly as they do if shot with a 223. I shot one
square through the brain at about 50 feet and, although I am sure he was dead
instantly, his body twitched and flopped something fierce. Any bystanders
would have felt that I had done something inhumane.

honest ground hogs hibernate in winter. ever heard of punxatawney phil?
I suspect you are seeing either southern ground hogs, or ....less than
honest ground hogs. If you hold where a chucks neck would be if he had
one, super x 22 hollowpoints do a real fine job, if you hit that spot,
all the way out to 100 yards.

not overly sure what they are. weather has been in the mids 60's and low
seventies for almost two weeks now here in tennessee. might not be a true
ground hog.. not certain since i haven't seen them. just know they are still
active from this individuals reports.

going to have to get creative if they arent active still..

thanks for the ammo tip.

Your 22LR will work fine. I used to lie on the ground 7-8 feet down
wind from a hole with my Crossman BB gun. When they lift their nose to
the top of their hole, I'd take the safety off. When their head is out
of the hole, I'd shoot them in the eye or ear. The scariest part is
reaching down the hole to retrieve them not knowing if they were
completely dead. Everyone I've tried to kill, I've done so; no wounded
animals. The ones I've taken were 10-20 pounders.

Good luck hunting.
