So I was hoping to get some feed back from others as to how to you do
this properly? I have purchased some how to books, but I feel like
there isnt enough information in them on how this is done.
Any and all feed back or suggestions would be apreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Steve

Steve,
Glad to have you among our ranks. If you haven't already, track down a copy
of Lovett Williams' book "After the Hunt." It has plenty of ideas on caring
for the meat AND the trophy. I like to scald and pick the bird, my wife
prefers to skin 'em and breast 'em out. I could go into long discriptions of
how these methods are accomplished, but it's better if you can see it done.
I think Lovett's book is the next best thing to being there.
Get involved with your local chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation
and you'll meet some folks that might be willing to help with caring for your
first bird. Call 1-800-THE-NWTF to join and find out about your local
chapter.
Best of luck...let us know how you do. Good Hunting!!!!
Working for the Wild Turkey,
Ray

I assume that you've had domestic turkeys and chickens before from the
local store, so you at least know what the end product looks like. You
need to cut off the head and the legs, below the drum sticks, and remove
all the innards. Now the hard part. You have to pick all the feathers
then all the pin feathers. Sometimes it works best if you can dunk the
bird in hot water to loosen the feathers. But you'll need a large pot
to do so. Once it looks like the one from the local supermarket, you're
ready to cook or freeze.

Hi Jeff,
Generally speaking, you can get turkey eggs from any number of hen turkeys
in the spring of the year. (sorry)
You might try checking with area shooting preserves. Many of them have
turkeys and are willing to sell eggs or know where you might get some. Just
be careful about what you plan to do with the turkeys. Most game depts
frown on released turkeys.

Contact the Poultry Sciences Department at Louisiana State University in
Baton
Rouge. They will know where to get them and may even have some they'll sell
you. Be aware that domestic strains of turkeys can't be transplanted to the
wild (even the brone ones) they don't survive.

In most, if not all, states releasing turkeys into the wild is not only
frowned on but is illegal. Wild turkeys are very vulnerable to diseases
carried by pen raised birds, notably blackhead disease. This can wipe out
a wild turkey flock in short order and contaminate the area to wild birds
for some time to come!
