I've got a "Ted Williams" brand 12 ga. auto-loader. I know these were
sold at Sears, this one around 1970. Anyone know who really made it, so I
can get a manual? Thanks.

My first gun was a Ted Williams break-action single-shot 20 gauge. It's a
light, sweet-handling gun, and I still use it for squirrels, rabbit, and
other small game.

I would also be interested in who made it, along with my 12-gauge J.C.
Higgins autoloader, also sold by Sears.

I remember when the Ted Williams / JC Higgins guns were sold by Sears. In
fact, I had a bolt action 12 guage. The guns were probably made by
whoever would do it for the least money. It was always my understanding
that Mossberg built most or all of them.

It's probably a Hi-Standard, they made guns for Sears for decades. When Sears
got
out of the gun business it was one of the things that drove them under.

Get a copy of the Gun Parts Company catalog, they have a cross reference list to
tell you who made what models for private labels. Your gunsmith will have a
copy.
If it's not a Hi-Standard it will be a Marlin most likely. Parts for the "name
brand" version will fit private label guns.

BTW, private label guns always sell for less used than the "name brands" and
I'll
pick up a JC Higgins or Ted Williams or Western Field model any time. Other
than
the name there's no difference from the originals.

I believe they were made by Stephens-Savage.

I think most of the "Ted Williams" and J.C. Higgins shotguns were made
by Marlin.

Find a Gun Parts Corp. catalog,they used to be
Numrich Arms. It has parts lists for most of the old Sears firearms as
well as indicating the original manufacturer. You can order a cat.
from their web page at www2.gunpartscorp.com/gunpartshome.html

In Article Re: What's a"Ted Williams" Shotgun

Check the serial number. Following is a list of manufacturers based on the
first three numbers of the serial number. BTW there are fourteen differnet
manufacturers listed for Sears.

The most common are: 273 = Olin Corp., Win.
103 = Marlin
101 = Savage
102 = Savage
446 = Mossberg
340 = Ithaca

The above information is taken from the NRA Firearms Fact Book, Third edition.

Is there someone out there who can help me similarly?

I have a Sears "Model 200" 12-gauge shotgun--Serial#P210XXX

Serial# and "M200 - 12 GA." stamped on front underside of the
receiver, just behind the magazine tube.

Any idea what manufacturer made this one? Looks a lot like a Mossberg,
but I'm not expert enough to tell for sure.

Thanks,
John

Find, beg ,borrow a Gun Parts Corp. catalog(used to be
Numrich Arms). They list most of the old Sears guns and have about
the only exploded views available. they'er on the www somewhere and
you can order a catalog from there.
If you e-mail me the mod. # I'll see if it's listed in
mine(old).

parts for most of the old Sears and Mont. Wards firearms as well as
hundreds of related "toys".
I think they've got a web page ,but can't
find te address right now.
E- mail me with the model number if you
can't wait for your catalog.

It's a shotgun sold by Sears under what used to be their quality
sporting goods brand "Ted Williams", named after the famed baseball
player Ted Williams.

Well..its the Sears Trade Name for firearms sold through Sears stores.
They generally were Winchesters, Marlins, Nobels, Stevens and other
brands.

Many firearms makers in the past would make a firearm..then stamp it
according to the buyers requirements. Some orders so marked may have
been as little as 10 items. Many small midwest hardware stores had
their names or a Nym "Peters Hardware Co" stamped where the makers
name normally would be. We dont see much of this anymore..but nearly
every retailer used to do this. Wards, Sears, Kmart, JL Hudsons, etc
etc

Western Field was Montgomery Wards "trade name"

Some further examples of just shotguns.... sold by other companies....

Excel--Crescent Fire Arms, Iver Johnson's Arms & Cycle Works,
Crescent-Davis Arms Corp.
Hercules--Iver Johnson's Arms & Cycle Works, Stevens Arms & Tool
Co
Knockabout--Crescent Fire Arms Co, Stevens Arms & Tool Co
Lakeside--Crescent Fire Arms Co
Peerless and Peerless Gun--Crescent-Davis Arms Co, Savage Arms Co
Texas Ranger--Stevens Arms & Tool Co
Ward's Hercules--Stevens Arms & Tool Co
Western Arms Co--Ithaca Arms Co
Western Field--Iver Johnson's Arms & Cycle Works, Stevens Arms &
Tool Co

IRRC..there were over 600 trade names of shotguns alone..many of them
being those small hardware stores. Ive got an old beater Nobel bolt
action 16 ga marked "Western Auto"....
