Forgive my ignorance, but once you have a live skunk in a trap, what the
hell do you do next!? Watch him starve to death through a telescope?

if you are going to kill the skunk you might want to consider washable
materials to build the trap
and a screened area to view the animal (to shoot it from distance)
Good Luck

I once caught a small one in a hav-a-hart trap I had set trying to catch
a ground hog. I threw a small tarp over it, pried open the door with a
stick, and went to work. It was gone, without any smell, when I came
home that night.

Here, this might come in handy:

This formula is a safe, fast and cheap skunk deodorant that was
developed by chemist Paul Krebaum of Lisle, Illinois. The recipe
includes:

1 quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 teaspoon liquid soap

Skunk essence is made of sulfur molecules. The materials in the
recipe, when mixed together, form an alkaline peroxide that
chemically changes the skunk essence into sulfonic acid; a
completely odorless chemical. Mix the solution when you are
ready to use and do not store.

Just put a long chain on the trap. When you get one, grab the chain and run
like a bat out of hell to the nearest body of water. Then put on the brakes
and play crack the whip and put that skunk out in the middle of the water.
If all goes well you won't have to undress outside and you'll still have
your trap with the skunk at the end of the chain.

Michael,

What we used to do is put some mayonaise in the bottom of a baby food jar and
sit
it out in the area the skunk was frequenting. They can get their heads in the
jar but can't pull it back out. The only drawback to this method is they spray
like crazy until they expire. Could be trouble if you live in a densely
populated area.

As a hunter, I'm obviously not opposed to killing other animals, but I think
we have an ethical obligation to give them a quick and dignified death.
