i'm about to buy a rifle for coyote hunting, but i would like to be able to
hunt deer too. Does anyone know the smallest leagal caliber rifle you can use
for deer in South Dakota? I have my eye on a Rem. 700 .223, id really like to
get that but i might have to go to a larger caliber to be able to hunt deer,
maybe a .243.

I used to be from s.d. and the last i new, is that .223 cal rifle is the
smallest at least at that time. shot placement is everything, but just to be
sure if it were i , and going to load my own for west river mulie, a 63 gr.
sierra semi pointed does very well. Please e-mail me back to tell how well you
did.kelly

.223 is legal in SD for deer. I myself use a .243 because that is the
smallest alowed by law in my (home) state of MN.

Two guys in my "regular" hunting group in SD use .223 almost
exclusively for all their hunting needs. ..coyote, turkey, prarie
dogs, etc etc) Mainly because the ammo is cheap and plentiful. I
love my .243 but I have had trouble sometimes finding ammo for it at
the local Kmart/Walmart/Pamida type stores. The local gunshops always
have plenty though.

The .223 seems to work fine on mulies, I don't recall any that
required a second shot (of course for a guy that can hit a prairie dog
at 300 yds, the deer seem like pretty big targets) ;-)

Neither the .243 or .223 has any appreciable recoil. I taught my 5'2"
100lb wife to shoot with the .243, and she was suprised that "it
didn't kick more"

If you want to hunt deer only in SD get the .223. It will cost ALOT
less to get proficient. If you think you might want to use it in
other states, get the .243, but then plan on more $$ for the ammo.

I think ethically, you shouldn't go with a .223. Iknow some people do, but
I would recommend using at LEAST an 85-90 grain bullet for deer, and you
can't get that with a .223. A .243 gives you low recoil and therefore less
flinch with the shot, but also gives you the option of good ammo/bullets for
quick kills. Just my $.02
