This bear was killed in Craven county. However the world records are
determined by measuring the skull of bear, not the weight. If my memory serves
me correctly i believe this bear weighed in at around 880lbs. They said the
hide was so streached that it appeared to have bald pateches. Believe it or
not the liberal Raleigh N&O ran a story on it about 3 weeks ago. Rumor had it
that this bear was feeding in a hog throwaway area. They say he was eating
appx a hog carcass a day.

Go figure..

Hope this helps.

havent heard any details on this huge black, but a few years ago in
Naples,Fla, a black bear was found along Route 951 in Collier County
resting with his head on his front paws like he was napping but alas the
magnificient animal was dead. At first he was estimated by Game and Fish to
weigh around 600 pounds, but imagine everyone's surprise when this animal
topped out over 900 lbs after bleeding out !!!!!!!
He was recorded as the largest Southeastern black bear ever recorded. Shame
such an animal had to go to waste.

I can't seem to find the article, so it goes something like this:

A man from TN was bear hunting in eastern NC. There had been reports
of a large bear in the area, and a local hog farmer was reporting that
hogs were disappearing at a rate of one per day. The disappearing
hogs were dead hogs that somehow died during the natural occurance of
hog farming. I have no idea how that happens or if it is common.
Basically, this bruin was eating a hog per day.

It was bayed with hounds, but the bear was so darn fat, it couldn't
climb a tree. They bayed it on the ground. After they skinned it,
they discovered that it had a full 8" of fat on it's back. It weighed
either 880 or 860. I think it was 880 lb. It was mentioned in the
article that it might not make the world record. Bears are scored on
skull measurements, and this bear's weight was more from fat and
overeating than from age and bone mass. It took two 4X4 ATV's to drag
it out.

Sorry I couldn't find the article. It was in the Raleigh _News and
Observer_ (www.newsandobserver.com) and Carolina Adventure magazine.
