I can't seem to find the article, so it goes something like this:
A man from TN was bear hunting in eastern NC. There had been reports
of a large bear in the area, and a local hog farmer was reporting that
hogs were disappearing at a rate of one per day. The disappearing
hogs were dead hogs that somehow died during the natural occurance of
hog farming. I have no idea how that happens or if it is common.
Basically, this bruin was eating a hog per day.
It was bayed with hounds, but the bear was so darn fat, it couldn't
climb a tree. They bayed it on the ground. After they skinned it,
they discovered that it had a full 8" of fat on it's back. It weighed
either 880 or 860. I think it was 880 lb. It was mentioned in the
article that it might not make the world record. Bears are scored on
skull measurements, and this bear's weight was more from fat and
overeating than from age and bone mass. It took two 4X4 ATV's to drag
it out.
Sorry I couldn't find the article. It was in the Raleigh _News and
Observer_ (www.newsandobserver.com) and Carolina Adventure magazine.
