I'm familiar with the Leupold Vari-X III as I have three of them. Burris
I don't know, but the Black Diamond benchrest scope was recently tested
here by Vince Bottomley (a benchrest shooter and regular contributor to
Target Sports magazine). He plainly liked it and rated it up there with
Leupold and not far behind the Germans IIRC.
I could buy Schmidt & Bender but I think they're too expensive so it's
come down to the Burris LRS Signature Select v Leupold Vari-X III. These
variously come in 4-16x44, 3.5-10x50 etc with 25 or 30mm tubes. There is
some argument in favour of the 25mm tube (in terms of availability of
mounts) and the 40mm objective. The Leupolds are priced about 20%
higher than the Burris and I wonder if that's because they're actually
better or because the importer is cashing in on Leupold's better known
name.
I particularly like the [illuminated] Burris Ballistic Plex, which is
calibrated for a generic high velocity cartridge (.243, .270 etc). It's
unlikely to match anyone's rifle in particular, but I like the idea and
if you know that the '300 yard line' is actually 275 yards with your
handload, it's workable. Leupold do a similar thing [but not
illuminated] and for around $360, will fit a reticle that precisely
matches your handload - you tell them what bullet you're using and the
muzzle velocity.
Here's the Burris Ballistic Plex and the illuminated version.

The alternative is Leupold's Illuminated Duplex. I like their
illuminated German No 4 but that's only available in 1 cm clicks. (The
Burris is also available with their illuminated No 4, with 1/4 inch
clicks).
If you go here, scroll to Vari-X IIIs, and then hold your cursor over
"VX-III 3.5-10x50 ILLUM. RETICLE" it will show (a pretty small image) of
the illuminated duplex and German No 4 Dot reticles.

Hi Jonathan,
These scopes are both great scopes. I would ask my self the question
were are you going to use the scope the most. Here in United States we
only can hunt from 1/2 hour before sunrise to ½ hour after sunset.
In this time frame the lighted crosshairs is not needed the Leupold
III gathers enough light to do this? I sell scopes in my store and I
will tell you if you would invest in Buying a Leupold VX-7 You will be
amazed on this scope. I love it. And I will tell you this is the best
scope I have ever had the pleasure of looking thru. I really love this
one. It is a little costly but I sold one to a gentleman that switched
the Quick mounts form Leupold and he got the laser bore sighter and he
has one scope for 4 rifles. With the warranty that Leupold offers with
all the scopes Mainly the VX-7 you can not go wrong with the Leupold.
With the VX7 you decide when you are done hunting not the time of day.
Thanks for listen to me

Much the same here, for deer. But we can shoot foxes and rabbits after
dark, using lamps.

To be frank, I've found them wanting on occasions. Bambi has shown
himself at last light and whilst I could see the deer, I couldn't shoot
because the scope wasn't up to the task. Because of this, I had one of
my Leupold 6x42 converted from the standard duplex to a No 4 reticle. It
was better than the duplex, but the Kahles and my S&B I subsequently
bought both outperform the Leupold and by quite a margin. Horses for
course, of course, the Leupold is cheaper than the other two.

I guess you haven't owned a Swarovski, then. Tell me about the VX-7,
how does it differ to the VX-III range?

I'm not doing that, I want one scope per rifle.

I hear people rave about this but, frankly, I don't want the scope to
fail in normal use. The German scope makes provide a 30-year warranty.
I'm almost 50 now, so I'll be happy with 30 years of cover. :-)
HOLY COW!!!! We have a Jonathan Spencer sighting! :-)
How the heck are you? Is it just me, or has it really been ages since
you've been on this newsgroup?
For everyone else - Jonathan is one of the few that remembers the first
(and I think only) rec.hunting.antelope trip back in 1994 (I think it
was 1994?). We gotta do that again sometime.

A while. I've posted a few times over the past few month, and no one
noticed. :-)

I wasn't on the first, but I was on the excellent 1996 trip.
Unfortunately the regulations concerning groups all applying for tags in
the same area changed and it isn't possible to do it as before.
In the interim, I've been hunting in Africa (Namibia, plains game) and
will be going to Idaho next October for bear and elk.

Oh, search the archives for this
"TRIP REPORT r.h.wy.antelope.1996 Part 1 (long)"
and then Part 2 and Part 3. I never did finish the series.
I believe there are similar reports from the 1994 trip. The short of it
was, 10 of us from rec.hunting met outside of Baggs, WY (south central)
for a combined antelope/mule deer hunt. My wife & I came from Texas (my
wife was the only female in camp), couple of guys came from CA, 1 from
WY (he acted as our "host", couple of others from CO, think 2 came from
NM, and 1 from MI. A few only hunted for 3 days or so (the "locals"),
but most of us stayed for a week. Everyone went home with something
(I got a deer).
We were a very eclectic group - it was a VERY good time.
I *think* my wife and I were the only ones left on rec.hunting who was
on that trip.
