I inherited a savage 99A in .243 from my grandfather and am curious on manufacture date....I have been to savage99.com and the only information I can get is that it is post 1951....I have read that the .243 is a later caliber, so just curious if anyone can help me out. some characteristics: tang safety, rotary magazine, straight grip stock. thanks for our feedback.

First, the .243 Win cartridge was first introduced in 1955 by Winchester
in their Model 70 bolt action and Model 88 lever action, so it's got to
be more recent than that. (Assuming by .243 you do mean .243
Winchester...) Unless the barrel has been replaced...

You say you checked savage99.com for the date, I found this page there:
http://www.savage99.com/savage99_dates.htm

Notice near the bottom they have a section called "Lever Boss Codes:".
Looks like Savage started embossing a letter on the lever to signify year
of manufacture from 1949 through 1970. See if you can find that.

If that doesn't help, try asking in rec.guns.

I have a Savage 99 .243 Win. That was a great gun. Mine shoots 3/4" groups at 100 yds. It is flat shooting and does the trick...although a 30-06 seems to knock deer down faster.

I wrote Savage to get the date on my gun.

Let me know if you want to get rid of that old thing.
