Has anyone hunted for elk, ON PUBLIC LAND, in the middle park area of Colorado?
I'm trying to find an area where my Dad & I can get a cow in the 1st, or 2nd
season. If someone knows something about area 18,181, 27, 28, 37, or 371,
please let me know. I know there is a lot of National Forest area, as well as
several State Trust Lands areas. I'm looking for some help deciding which
public area to hunt. As we will be after cows only, maybe some one knows of a
rancher who would like to thin the cow population on his ranch, in this area.
We're not intersted in hiring a guide for this cow only hunt. Maybe some of my
Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation buddies have some ideas. I serve on the Denver /
Mile High chapter committee, and I'm Life Member # 5881.

I haven't hunted out of north park for a while. But I always seemed to
see something around the Willow Creek area (18 I think). I've seen a herd
that use to hang out around the Lake Granby area. This is mostly
private, which is why the herd liked to hang there during the season.
Since your in Denver, I suggest these two area to be souted out
immediately, going back every so often to check it out.

My dad and I go up east of Wladen every year-to tell the truth we have yet to
see elk up ther (!) Tons and tons of sign-but no elk. You may have better
luck though-for some reason I can't seem to get my dad to walk quietly (!) :)
good luck!

Actually the northeast side of the Divide (with Willow Creek), south of Rand,
is in #17, and south-west of the Divide is #18. We have hunted that area for
the last three years, usually camping on or near the Divide in #17 and hunting
over the Divide in #18 (no motor vehicles allowed in that art of #18). First
year one of our guys got a huge 6x6 near Troublesome pass. The last two years
have been less good and we have seen on a couple elk with no one getting one.
This year we are trying a different area. Write if your have questions.

Unless you applied for a cow tag for 1st season, you won't be able to hunt
any but bulls then. You may know that 2nd and 3rd seasons in Middle Park will
allow either-sex harvest with an over-the-counter license. GMU 27 has some
good places to hunt for cows in the 3rd season. Check out the State Trust
Land directory for STL units in 27 and access. Elk move onto these when the
snow gets too deep on the Gore Divide. In GMU 18 or 181, check out areas west
of Rocky Mountain NP, where elk go when moving out of the park. Wherever you
hunt in Middle Park, especially after 1st season, expect to see lots of
hunters, regardless of what DOW says.

Walden is in North Park, not Middle Park. As a "native Coloradoan and
mountian boy, you should know that ;-)

Myself, I'm more of a fan of South Park ;-) Did you see the episode
when Uncle Jimbo took the boys hunting? As he was handing each of them a
gun and a beer, Kyle asks, "But Uncle Jimbo, isn't it dangerous to drink
and hunt (or words to that effect)"
"Of course not!" he replied. "Huntin' sober would be like fishin'...
sober."

DISCLAIMER: To everyone who has never seen the CARTOON "South Park", it
takes place in South Park, Colorado. It is SATIRE. That means funny to
people like me. This is HUMOR. The above quote is supposed to be funny.
If you don't find it funny, skip to the next post.

I do know that-just a lapse of sense-but, as I hear it from Walden locals-the
elk know exactly when hunting starts and they head south-mostly into Rocky Mtn
Natl. but maybe some will head for Middle Park :)

YEAH!! Ya'know what? When the credits are flying by at the end-watch for the
animation director Eric Stough-I know him! I'm so proud of my tiny connection
:) He's been my neighbor since before I can remmeber :) Anyhow-that was a
pretty funny episode-I like the part where one of the kids said that Cartman
always lied and Cartman said he'd blow the kid away-and Uncle Jimbo said "Watch
out!! That's dangerous.....you're gonna spill your beer." Laughed my butt off
