bow season is here

Am heading down to SE Ohio to the farm for some bow hunting this weekend.
Finally bought a new compound this season after 10+ years of using a Horton
crossbow that has now become the wifes'. I was hesitant to switch from
fixed blades(100gr. Muzzys) to mechanical, but was amazed at the field point
accuracy of the Rage broadheads. Am shooting 3-blade(1.5") Rages' on 400
Easton Excel carbon arrows with my Bowtech SWATand and have become very
accurate out to 30 yds. Really love the setup and can't wait to draw on a
nice one this year.

Did I mention the wife? Wow...is she hooked for life! Hunts archery,
shotgun and now... muzzleloader seasons with me. Some people might say too
bad for me...but as the kids have grown older we are spending alot more time
together by ouselves and loving it. I quite often get out for some
"manly-man" time as well...so there.

MS bow season opens tomorrow. I am a crossbow hunter as i have some
shoulder damage. Fixed blade. I thought about mechanical blades.
Let us know how they work for you.

I have heard they are fine even on a crossbow. Anyone have experience
with that?

I've been shooting a crossbow for about 5 years after having neck
problems. I started with mechanicals as they were recommended to fly
better.

I went back to fixed blades after two bad results with mechanicals.
In one case it appeared that first blade opened flipping arrow into
deer's brisket. Second, good hit with incomplete penetration resulted
in no blood trail.

Other hunters have told me they had similar experiences. Mechanicals
can work extremely well but can flip when angle is sharp, sometimes
don't open and penetration is not as good.

Hi Don,

Our season starts October 15th here in Alabama. Two weeks from today and counting down. Got me 2 Muzzy's and 2 Thunderhead's, each of them 3 blade and 100 grains, and one mechanical ready and lined up to go. Good luck to you and your wife and be safe out there as well.

The last deer my bow took was a 164# 5-point with a mechanical. It
worked fine, drew a lot of blood and the deer piled up about 35 yards
from where it was hit. This was not a pass-through.

I prefer 100gr. satalite titans, but am unable to find them anymore
and when my current supply is gone, I'm not sure what I will use.

I used 75gr. wasp ssl years ago with good results also.

The most important point is to keep any blades razor sharp.

Well my wife got her first bow kill this past weekend using the crossbow and
Muzzy fixed blades. Nice sized doe plus she even vidoetaped the whole thing
by herself! A husband couldn't be prouder. She even used one of her
birthday presents to help field dress...the Butt-out 2 tool. Nice invention
as it's very easy to use.

I didn't have any monsters come by me so I came up empty. Oh well, next
time maybe.

Someone alerted our deer. They did not come by the stand, but were
standing 1/2 mile away as I walked out in the dark. Blue eyes shining
in the dark. My crossbow was not cocked and I would have walked
through them! I hissed to clear the path at about 15 yds. They were
blinded by the light, I guess. They jumped back 10 or so yards and I
walked on. Try that by my stand!
