I have a 2 year old Golden who is extremely gun/noise shy. A year ago on
July 4th, some little *@#!?&%'s set a cannon off right at her, about 10
yards away. Ever since then, she hides when she hears a shot or loud bang
(Thunder, etc.). Any suggestions on what I can do to get her over this, or
is it hopeless? If you know of any books, videos, etc that deal with this,
I'd appreciate it. She's got good instincts and I feel she's make a good
gun dog.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Systematic desensitization. A slow progression of raising the level of noise in
proximity to the dog. Read some psychology books on the subject.
Basic behavior mod.

Prevention is the only sure fired cure.

hi! try taking two pieces of 2x4 about 6 i. long and when you walk your dog
in the woods slap them together every once in awhile , 2 or 3 times in 1/2
hour at first and soon the dog will be so in to hunting it will ingnore the
noise and then go to a 22 blank after the dog excepts the noise of the 2x4
and then to a shotgun whe the 22 is excepted ---this has worked for me very
well Bruce Tinkler

Im no expert on Goldens, but if shes 2 yrs old and you have a good fealing
she'd make a good gun dog then that tells me she is not trained yet. and she
wont be, if you have waited for 2 years to do anything consistantly with her
and one day youre planning on training her then it wouldnt have made a
diffrence on the cannon - she's most likely not going to be trainable, she's
almost too old to train. most trainers would hesitate to take her. all of her
learning starts at 8 months old and she's good till about 2 on training - but
you may be too far behind

Hello Mike & Clelia,

Jou must learn your dog that the noise of a gun is real fun!
In Holland we have a training program for dogs who are afraid of fireworck
and gunshots.
Its not easy for me to tell this in English but i give it a try,

You must take your dog for a walk on his leash ( so you have control over
the dog)and let a friend at great distance fire some gunshots once and a
while (one at the time)
When the dog hears the shot, you give the dog something he likes to eat
verry ,verry much and walk further with him . Important is to act if nothing
special happend!, so act happy.
Every time the dog hears a gunshot he gets a treat and sooner or later he
learns that the gunshot means "fun/ food" and he ignores the gunshot.
The distance between dog and gun must be verry carefully reduced?
Its not easy to train this and it takes a lot of time, but its possible with
the help of a friend and you must be verry patient!
Verry important is: don't go to fast!

Its not easy, but you can give it a try.

Mike, with all due respect I strongly disagree with your assessment of
whether or not a 2 year old can be trained for hunting. That is simply not
true and very misleading. Over the years I have been associated with many
dogs that were not started until past the age of 2. Right now I am providing
the initial training to three Brittanys. One is 6, the other 5 and the third
we believe to be aroung 7. All three are progressing rapidly and should be
fully broke to wing/shot/fall by mid April. It really never is to late, if
you just take the time.

I watch the show Doc on Point on the OLN network, and on last weeks show the
trainer said they did not start training Doc,an English Setter until he was
5 years old,and now he has his own show. Maryann.

So does Bob Villa but that doesn't make him a great carpenter.

But the show is HORRIBLE, IMO....They show a new trainer every time with
Doc and their training styles vary quite a bit. In the ones I've seen, the
trainers have been extremely over baring, not allowing much in the way for
natural ability or learning from mistakes.. LOL...And they're hunting planted
quail for the most part.
Not sure how he got his own show, but it needs re-casting, lol.
