Labs vs. Goldens for hunting/family

interested in is a great family/neighborhood dog that I can hunt with.
Hunting will be mainly ducks and geese and will be done with a fervor in
season, but it will be a house dog the rest of the year. I've heard much
about the goldens being great 'family' dogs, but nobody around here seems to
use them much for ducks.
Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

house dogs as well as hunters. I prefer labs because they're a little more
driven and respond to training better. Also, I do a lot of upland hunting and
believe labs are far superior (just my opinion here).
I have not found that either dog matures faster, is better around children,
or is truely a better dog at retrieving.
You might want to consider that goldens are not as cold tollerant as
labradors and they tend to pick up burrs.
Check out a few different breeders of both breeds. Find one that lives and
hunts with their dogs as you do. You don't want a super high energy dog (Labs
and goldens often have this problem) but you also don't want a big lump that
won't hunt for you.
Make sure your breeder OFA, CERF, and OFEL their stock for the maximum
protection that you'll be getting a healthy puppy (by no means is it a
guarentee!).

Either Goldens or Labs would be excellent for both. In both cases, if you
are selective about getting a pup with a proven hunting background (which,
imho, is more than just the parents) as well as tempraments that you find
appealing, you can't go wrong with either. From there, you can base your
decision as to which breed based on your preferences in other areas (ie.
"do you prefer the long coat, or short coat", "which do you think looks
better", etc.).

tolerant of cold. I have hunted with around 10 labs of which all were family
dogs and good hunters of both waterfowl and uplands. I have only hunted with
two goldens that were both very good family dogs and hunters. But both of the
goldens were finished with ducks once it the water got below about 40.
If that's not an issue find a well bred dog in either but for my money I'd buy
a lab every time... better chance of success and at least I don't have to mess
with long hair and burrs.

was our first every hunting dog/first dog i've trained and i knew nothing about
training or even ducking at the time. We got him from a family that had no
history of hunting. We made sure he had a strong obedience background by
taking him to class. Now he goes after everything from dove to geese.
He's always has the drive and we hunt 3 times a week but he's been right with
us in the field since he was 6 months old. As for the cold, i'm from delaware
and have never had a problem. We put a jacket on him and he's fine to go all
day and we hunt straight through feb. and march for snow geese.
As for the longer hair, i prefer it to labs especially when they are shedding.
It seems the shorter lab hear gets all over everything in the house. but that
just a personal thing.

Ohh no...You are correct here! Labs as well as goldens, especially house
dogs, seem to shed quite a bit! I use a Zoom Groom brush and a shedding blade
on mine on a regular basis and it keeps it off my carpet.

The only thing for sure is they bulk up in the fall depending on the
environment, i.e. a Houston fall coat is greatly lighter than a Minneapolis
fall coat. Coat max's around January and February. After that it seems to
depend on the genetics of the line.

How about a Chesapeake Bay Retriever . They are great duck dogs
and with stand the cold pretty good.Of course not as popular as labs
and goldens.I wonder why, not that I have two.

so loving. I know that his pedigree indicates field champions, but we only
hunt tennis balls in the Wortham Fountain . I know Labs are excellent gun
dogs and the heat in Houston seems not to bother him. Of course, I am not
running him yet because of his young age. His dispostion is so friendly: he
loves everyone.
I understand that both breeds chew a great deal as pups. Mine is no
exception.
I have friends with Goldens, but none of them use them for hunting.
Well, this is also a prejudiced point of view as I am a certified Lab NUT!

about 2 minutes! : )

last evening on the way back.
It looks pretty good up there, but they need a bit of rain there right
now.
