Thanks Stu:
I contacted Clair. He though that I should try a product called
emtryl(sp). Not available in the USA but available here. I thought that
I had eliminated Kanker or Canker (sp) because I saw no flem in the
throat, but he says that there is a type that settles in the innards. I
ordered his books as well.
A local pigeon fancier suggested that I try tetracycline. He suggested
that I might have a problem caused by excessive floor dust and mouse
droppings. If young birds respiratory system becomes infected, mom and
dad will just stop feeding them?

Make sure the nesting birds have access to a shallow bath pan every four
or five days. This is especially important in low humidity areas. If
you just have one pair, there is a good chance that one of your birds
are infertile. You can check 7 day eggs by holding them up to the sun.
A freshly layed egg will kind of glow. A fertile egg will turn "dark"
and not pass any light. Good eggs will hatch 18 days after the second
one is layed. If there are some pigeon guys around your area you could
just get a couple of freshly lain eggs and switch them under your birds
if you think fertility is the problem. Try and get eggs that are within
three or four days age of the ones you are tossing. Another thing you
could do is ask around for some young (30 day old) "late hatches". This
time of year a lot of the racers have raised all the young birds they
want for this season and are willing to give away some extras that they
will just have to eliminate anyway. They feel better about it if they
know you're not getting into the racing business and will be in
competition with them next year. These birds will settle into your loft
as if they were born there and work quite nicely for training.
Good Luck,

# I just read thru the thread for your posting. Lots of good ideas and

# go for a "B" mix with whole corn. You can mix that 50-50 with whole
# barley in the non-breeding season to save $. Make them finish what is
# in their feeder before adding new. I've been raising (and racing)
# pigeons a long time and have never had one starve while there was feed
# in the bowl. Make sure that a good quality pigeon grit is available
# free choice at all times separate from their feed.

Stu, does the ivomec eliminate lice and internal parasites in pigeons? I
have used piprozine 52 in the water but I have never tried ivomec.
Do you use the injectable? How frequently? How much per gallon?
Thanks

# I have six pairs of homers and 2 pairs of wild pigeons. I have had no
# problem with the wild birds, but recently I have started to notice that
# some young homers are not doing as well. They appear to do well up until
# about three to four weeks of age and then some seem to just stop gaining
# body weight and seem to get weak. They progress to where they have
# difficulty walking up right and when I check there is very little food
# in their crop. When examined I notice a clicking sound when they breath,
# so I think that it may be respiratory. I have never seen one bounce back
# and recover, so I usually euthanize when the condition sets in. Any
# thoughts would be appreciated.

# I never had the trouble Allen mentions, but wouldn't be surprised if a
# change of food helps. Pigeons like corn - whole popcorn is good. A
# commercial pigeon feed is probably the most cost effective.
#
# As for Ed's problem - I had the identical problem summer before last (last
# summer the birds didn't even lay the first egg). I believe it was caused
# by one of the diseases indemic to pigeons carried by the parents but not
# debilitating to them. I started medicating the water with Albon, but by
# then it was too late in the season. The next summer new, non homer, birds
# were introduced to the flock; but no breeding took place at all. A friend,
# who had once raised homers suggested my loft was not exposed to enough sun
# and was too wet. Weasels solved my problems this past winter by killing
# all the birds. I do not plan to reuse the loft for any bird of any kind
# until I can clean it and fumigate it.
#
# I am away from home now, when I return I will try and get some references
# together for you unless someone beats me to it. There are a couple of
# people sometimes on the list with extensive pigeon experience.
