Hi,

I am researching the best places to go quail hunting. I want to take a
serious quail trip. So far the two choices I have come across are
Abilene, Texas area (Specifically Albany to Anson) or going on one
of those Plantation quail hunts in the South, such as Albany, Georgia.

Any opinions on these trips or areas ????

More Background:

I live in Denver and we take a number of Pheasant hunting trips to
Western Kansas every year. We do very well with the pheasants
but we always come across one or two coveys of quail. The quail
are very exciting and after years of pheasant hunting I want to do
a trip where we just focus on quail.

My Uncle recommended that we take one of those Plantation trips to
the South, but I don't know what to think of them. They seem a little
fancy for me. Plus I heard you just hunt over pen raised birds. Lastly
for me I would have to fly down there and would probably have leave
my dog at home.

The Texas trip seem far more appealing. I have talked to some
landowners and game wardens and it seems like you can hunt with
an organized quail outfit or just pay a trespass fee to a group of
landowners. Texas is still within driving distance from Denver and
would easily allow me to bring my dog.

Have a good one,
Thanks,

I've done both. The plantation hunts will be over pen-raised birds. The
quality of pen-raised birds is highly variable. If they are good birds, it's
not too different from the real thing. If extreme care wasn't taken in
raising the birds, you have to kick the running birds up and they are poor
fliers. In my experience, it's a rare situation to find a plantation that
does a great job raising their birds.

I've only been to Texas once, near Childress. It was fabulous hunting! Quail
everywhere. The terrain was fairly thorny with plenty of prickly pear cactus
so make sure you boot your dogs. There is no comparison to real wild bird
hunting. I'd pick Texas, especially if you'd have to leave your dog behind to
hunt the plantation.

Envious,
Tommy

I've been to the Albany GA area many times since the 1950s, most recently
in February when I was visiting there for a couple of weeks. I didn't see
a single quail and my dogs didn't either :-((((( But, if there is any
plantation hunting for well managed wild quail there now at a price you
want to pay I doubt you'll find better hunting in nicer country anywhere.
Certainly not in west Texas<Grin>

I'd contact the Albany (or Thomasville) Chamber of Commerce and ask about
the situation. A place that comes to mind is Pineland Plantation in Newton
GA but I have no reason to believe it is open to paying customers.

MAKE SURE YOU WILL BE HUNTING WILD BIRDS EXCLUSIVELY

having lived in this area and chased birds for 24 years, i can say that this
might not be the best of years to be quail hunting in this area, we are in the
middle of a three year drought and the birds and cover may be few and far
between
my suggestions in texas would be in and around amarillo (clarendon), or south
texas
i will be glad to offer more opinions

Two years ago I visited a relative in Amarillo to do some quail hunting on
the public lands since I was told crossing a fence and being on private
property could get you arrested with a felony charge. I hunted public lands
northeast and southeast of Amarillo. Remember all of the residents of
Texas that could not get on private lands also hunted those areas. I saw
more armadillos than I did quail. I was there in early December and any
quail that there might have could have been harvested earlier by resident
hunters. Considering the non-resident hunting license and the fee to hunt
the state managed areas I would recommend any place OTHER than Texas for
quail hunting.

Georgia will be pen raised birds. They fly half as fast as wild quail.
Texas, South of San Antonio usually produces more birds than West Texas.
The best wild bird quail hunting is in Mexico. A Mexican trip over dogs
will run about the same as a plantation hunt. It is very hard to find day
leases on prime quail hunting land in Texas. You can, however, buy a hunt
with an guide. Birds will be wild birds and it will be over dogs. Try
looking up the Mariposa Ranch. They are just out of Falfurrias, Tx. and I
believe they have a website.

If you want wild bird hunting with no guarantee of a limit go to Texas. If you
want released birds, no limit (other than your pocketbook), easy hunting go to
Georgia.

I recently moved to Omaha, Nebraska any insight in hunting western Kansas?
