I am considering a beeper collar for my Brittany. Which brand Innotek or
Tri-Tronics seems the best in your opinion and why? What is the relative
loudness and pitch (hearability for these slightly weakened ears).
Reliability? Waterproofing? Which bothers the birds and dog less?
Durability? Weight and size? (she's on the small side at 32 # and will be
wearing a Tri Tronics Pro100 E collar also). They both look ridiculous so a
tie there!

Thanks for any help you can give.

One unit you haven't mention is the ATS Sonic. I really like my ATS Sonic,
it's adjustable for both volume and pitch (a number of other things too).
Seems some people that have "shotgun" ears can't hear the high pitch
frequencies as well and these units let you adjust for lower pitch too.
They also last longer on a standard 9V battery than any other unit I've been
around (and I've been around several people using Innotek and TT). Whenever
I'm around people using either the Innotek or TT beepers, they're are always
changing batteries. The literature for Innotek and TT overstate their
battery life, in my experience; king of like the the 1 hour camcorder
battery that last really 30 minutes . . .

I get about 80 hours of actual hunting time with my ATS unit by backing off
the beeper run cycle to once every 20 seconds or so. A little less time in
January cold. I hunt heavy cover in N. Wisconsin with a dog that ranges
30 - 150 yds, and have little trouble keep track or hearing her on all but
the windiest days. Check it out.

Check out ATS Sonics site - tops in dog beepers in my judgment.

The July issue of The Checkcord is up! (at last)

This month I finally get around to posting the piece covering the visit
to The Checkcord of Mr. Itaru Tanaka, from Japan. Mr. Tanaka is a bird
hunter and bird dog enthusiast there. We met on the internet last winter
and he came to visit me last May here in Nebraska. If you don't think
that the internet has changed EVERYTHING you have been in a cave for the
last 5 years.

Anyway,

Just a heads up for the list members, The Checkcord is going to
celebrate Y2K by giving away not one, but two FREE weekend hunting trip
packages for two readers this coming season. Details to come NEXT month.

Hope you all are having a great summer!!

Thanks for the link--The units look good but they are awfully heavy at 7 or
9 ounces but the main problem seems to be that I wouldn't be able to use the
E-collar with them. Am I correct?

They are not the lightest units around, your right about that. I always
hunt my 52lb Gordon Setter with her TT LR100 collar and the ATS Sonic
together. Each are on their own collar. I use electrical tape or long
nylon cable ties to bond the two units together so they don't bang around or
pinch the dog. It doesn't slow her down one bit and its easy to remove the
trainer if I don't want it on.

The TT beeper is smaller and lighter no doubt about it, and it can slide
onto the same collar. I've seen several TT units though that would re-start
themselves everytime the dog shook himself or just took a hard jump. It was
annoying when it happened every 3 minutes. Seemed the restart/on/off switch
is on the backside of the unit, between the back of the beeber and the
collar and it wasn't stiff enough to resist compression. I did hunt with
person with a TT beeper obtained late last year and it was perfect, rarely
resetting itself. Maybe TT corrected that problem.

I sent aTT Upland collar back last year because the beeper would beep all
the time ,while in point only mode.I put holes in my Innotek collar strap
and attach my TT Sportsman e-collar to it during hunting season.

Yeah, those all electric dogs with a beeper and e-collar on do seem to look
stupid but don't seem to mind. I prefer beepers that run on a 9 volt
batter. Seems to last for about 2 season and is less trouble than the
recharable.

The beeper I got w/ a batter is from TE scott. Bulky but dependable.

I have been using Tri-Tronics products for more than 15 years
e-collars, no bark, beeper.... I was alway satisfied with the quality,
dependability and service. Two years ago I purchased the New
Tri-Tronics beeper collar. It lasted a week. Two of my hunting
companions on the same hunting trip where also using brand new
Tri-Tronics beeper and both where defective before the end of the
trip. All the units where damaged by water. The new slip on concep was
great but the quality was poor.

I had read about this problem on rec.unting.dogs so I checked with
Tri-Tronics before purchasing the beeper and recommending it to my
hunting friends. Tri-Tronics told me that the problem was
corrected.... being a satisfied and loyal Tri-Tronics customer I
believed them... mistake..... the problem was not corrected.
Result: two weeks hunting vacation without beepers...

I am now using my old Tri-Tronics beeper collars (had them repaired by
Collar Clinic). My hunting companions purchased ATS Sonic beepers and
are totaly satisfied.
