I am writing an essay on the names of pets and why people choose them.
Please e-mail me with the name of your pet and a brief description of its
origin. Thank you in advance for your help.

WE had a part Schnauzer (wieghted 11 lbs soaking wet full grown) that my wife
named Liebchen (my little love). She was only 4-5 wks old and could barely
stand when my wife rescued her. It seemed appropriate. both the dog and name
we believe are of German desent. She lived to 16 1/2.

This may sound silly, but my late golden retriever/collie/irish setter
mix was named Brandy. The decision was actually made by my wife. I did
encourage the name, though. You see, we already had a cat named
Alexander. So it was Brandy Alexander.

She was an excellent dog and I miss her. When we went hunting, we would
split up(yes, the dog and myself) and stay about 25 feet apart. I'd
watch her and she would see something and I'd get it, usually a squirrel.
The most amazing thing was that as long as she could see me, she would
accept hand signals(stay, go, come, fetch). Damn, I miss that dog. She
died about 16 months ago of cancer. Her fill-in, Cassie, hasn't got the
brains of a grape, but the kids love her.

Notice the A-B-C of the names? The next one will be a 'D.'

I named my pointer Shadrach, both Biblical, and also
(of more immediate concern, a great Neil Armstrong tune)
the other advantage is that I can threaten my housemate with Meshach and
Abednego when she complains about him too loudly.

My wife shows Shetland sheepdogs. I chose these 2 dog names. The first
one was Barley. His face was very mottled looking with lots of
interesting shapes and colors(he was a Blue Merle) for some reason it
reminded me of soup. Don't ask me why I just don't know. The other
unusual name I picked was Banchee. This little female was originally
named Ashes...I hated that name. One day when she was around 8 weeks
old, she was running around the house barking at the other dogs and
having a grand ol time. My wife came home and I was telling her
"...yeah she was running around here like a wild screaming Banchee this
morning." We just looked at each other and KNEW that was her name.
Fits her perfectly. She is still the *boss* of the other dogs including
my labs. The little fart(17 lbs) has all the other dogs convinced she
is:

ban.shee \'ban-(.)she-\ n [ScGael bean-si-th, fr. or akin to OIr ben
si-de
woman of fai]ryland : a female spirit in Gaelic folklore whose
wailing
warns a family of the approaching death of a member

We mis-spelled her name right from the start. No matter. Love her just
the same.

Mr Dee Dawg Dandy - we started out with Dandy because he ate dandelions
on the way home from picking him up in Kansas. The Mr Dee Dawg came
about from his very naughty puppyhood.
A Penny in my Pocket - she was such a sweet pretty little girl, I wanted
to name her Beauty by my Side because that's were she always was,
however, my family thought that was 'stupid' (can you tell we have
teenagers!?). Finally, it became Penny because she has a round coin
shaped orange mark in a white pocket shape on her side.
Yours Truly- came with her name, her call name is Trudy. Her litter
sister is named Syncerely Yours.
Radiant Beauty- Call name Belle, her name came about because of her
brilliant white coloring, her mother's name was Raving Beauty.
The newest will probably be called Duke, registered name Duke of Earle,
we live on Earle Circle. Although I would like it to be "Cash on
Delivery' call name Buck, the puppies were delivered c-section at 3 am!
The breeding was between Penny and Cash (A King's Ransom). It would be
appropriate to come up with some 'money' names.

our newest addition....a Griff is FLY
named after a town in Middle Tennessee that made an impression us.
also it is short and ends in LY which sounds different from FINN
which is the other dog's name.......btw you have to be in the right
frame of mind and actually go through FLY,TN to perhaps understand...
of course there is always ONLY,TN not far from FLY but sounds too much
like FLY for us to ever use it in the current household.
enjoy !

Well, Amber was named for her Amber colored eyes and Janie (Janie's
Freckled Cinnamon) because she has millions of cinnamon freckles on her
snout and I missread the handwritten pedigree, mistaking "Ch. Jamie's
Lightning" as "Ch. Janie's Lightning."

Both, sweet girls.

Hi!

We have 3 labs and one mutt:

Listo: While he was being brought from the breeder to us, the people
who were giving him to us named him this...The man who gave him to us is a
pigeon shooter, and as I understand it, when you shoot pigeons and you are
"ready" for them to throw the bird, you say "Listo" as you would say "pull"
for a skeet target...

Rowdy: He is Listo's son...and received his name from my nephew when he
was 3 weeks old...Bob named him after a wrestler (?) "Rowdy Roddy
somethin-or-other"...He IS rowdy, so it fits...

Tomas: was also named after a person...the husband of the woman who
rescued him, who also happens to be the man who gave us "Listo", whose name
is Tom...Tomas is the Spanish version of Thomas...

then there is "Lolita" the mutt - We rescued her from the street in front of
my office, which is in a mostly Spanish-speaking neighborhood....She gets
excited when we speak to her in Spanish, I guess because she understands it
better than English...When I was trying out names for her, she perked up on
all the "---ita" names, like Lolita, Rosita, Conchita, etc. and Lolita just
"stuck" so-to-speak....

Good luck on your essay

I've got a 10 month-old Llewellan Setter I named Kyrie of Hellmarx.
"Of Hellmarx" is from the pedigree, gotta make the breeder happy,
right?!

"Kyrie" (pronounced like Madam Curie), is latin, shortened form of
Kyrie Elaison, translated - "Lord have mercy." I bought the dog after
my own father passed away due to prostate cancer. She has been a
godsend, a real blessing, it's amazing what pets can help you through.

Kyrie is also from the title of a song from the early eighties by
Mister Mister. My favorite pre-race tune before events for my other
hobby, triathlons.

Hope this helps, good luck on your essay...hope I'm not too late to
make the cut!

Owners of Britts: First was "Amber" chosen because eye color fit and we
liked. Next were litter mates - "Rusty" and "Heidi". Rusty for the color -
lot's of orange and Heidi just because we all agreed we liked! Our basic
criteria was the name must be 'two syllables(?sp) because it would be easier
to call, especially when out in the hunt. We're now awaiting new member - a
GSP and we just haven't come up witha name we all like yet? Hoping your
project might give us some leads!! Anyway, hope our input helps and good
luck. Best, SS

Sorry for you... The "Kyrie eleison" is the only par of the mass where
*greek* words are in usage...:-(.

But your translation is OK ;-)).

My Irish Setter is named Scout after the young girl in Harper Lee's "To
Kill a Mokingbird". My wife was not fond of the name at first and would
not "approve" it. We went about two weeks without a name. Nature
abores a vacume so I started calling the dog Buddy. My daughter
suggested Snuggles because he was easy to snuggle. I think my son
wanted to name him Montana - a magic place. When she saw that Buddy was
starting to stick and feared that someone would label us rednecks, my
wife blessed Scout. All things come to he who waits.
