I've had a Brittany puppy for 3 months now (5 months old), and I've
recently started puppy training classes. I've also talked briefly with
someone who has a brother to mine.
Brittany's seem to be much more active than many house dogs. I've heard
more than one person refer to them as hyper. VERY quick to learn and
anticipates well so far...and he does get distracted, but not nearly as
much as other dogs I've seen. Based on his progress, I fully expect him
to grow out of most of this. He sticks very close and ALWAYS wants to
play, but I live alone and I'm not sure how that's affects him.
One of the most entertaining things for me at the moment involves
wanting to mouth when he plays. When the play gets just rough enough, he
will suddenly stop without warning, scan the house and come back with a
chew toy for us to play with. All without a word from me.
One of the reasons I looked for Britanny's in the first place is their
size. At 35 pounds fullgrown, I think they are not too big and not too
small. My sister has a chocolate lab that about 90 pounds or so.
I'll refrain from further gushing over how cool a dog he is, but I
highly recommend Brittany's.

From my experiance they make great house and family dogs. They ,
probably more than any other bird dogs like to be around people and
don't do well without a lot of interaction with their owners. Some
seem to be a little hyper at times, but I have two laying by my chair
right now that are a pleasure to have in the house. Never had a Lab so
I can't compare.

Over the last 35 years I've had lots of different dogs -- collies,
pomeranian, cocker spaniel, ex-hubby once raised some hounds, and lots of
mixed breeds ... the best dog (companion) I've ever had so far is Brandy -
my 7 year old male Brittany. Adopted him from a shelter about 4 years
ago. He'd just been neutered a few days before we got him. He's a
perfect gentleman, never chews up anything, perfectly housebroken, and
doesn't bark without good reason.
And of course, he is quite intelligent. When going through a basic
obedience course, he was often the best behaved dog of all - really made
me quite proud. I don't have any children - so Brandy is my "baby".
When I got him, my mother-in-law wasn't very happy. She didn't want a dog
around - too noisy. But he didn't bark AT ALL for the first few weeks,
and was so gentle and quiet with her that she fell in love with him (she'd
never had a dog herself and "hated" dogs - until we got Brandy).
Another family in our area has a Brittany. They had a lovely bitch but
she disappeared. They got a puppy earlier this year and I sometimes see
the dog as I pass by on walks with Brandy. I certainly intend to get
another Brittany if and when Brandy is no longer with us.

Dog lovers: What's your breed? Mine is Brittany!
Seems like I've heard exactly the same thing said about almost
every other breed of bird dog, even Pointers. Most of the so-called
versatile breeds claim that their dogs should not be kenneled and
need a lot of attention. I know I've heard that about Weims, Vizslas,
and GWPs. I've also heard the same things about English Setters. As
far as I can tell, if you ask anyone who has a bird dog as a pet and is
happy with their pet, they will say the same thing.

Brittanys like to run. Chasing a stick in the park gets old quick.
