Rashly: Bath Sheba, Solomon's mother, means "daughter of seven". David
violated the seventh commandment by not merely committing adultery, but
literally /stealing/ the wife of Uriah the Hittite, and having Uriah
done away with. The baby conceived in their illicit union died on the
seventh day. Subsequently Solomon added the Queen of Sheba, or "Queen
of Seven" to his collection. Paranoids should learn numerology and
spend the rest of their lives searching for the hidden meaning of this
in the bible.

Yes, but how come Shesh is Hebrew for six, and yet it's Ancient Egyptian for
Scribe? - unless all he ever wrote was 'six'!

And seven is Sheb'ah or Sheba' with ' representing the nice rattling
back-of-the-throat gutteral, 'Ayin - and possibly the number of people per
day who choke while trying to pronounce it!

Sheba, i.e. seven, also meant an oath.

That's a funny one too... in some transliterations Ayin is omitted, in
others, like "Gomorrah" it is made out to be a g. That and Heth are far
easier to pronounce after many years of smoking tobacco.

LOL!

Modern Hebrew seems to have dropped the 'Ayin as well. Pity. It's taken a
lot of the character out of it. It's still one of the most poetic-sounding
languages there is though, even when you do only catch about on word in
five!

Yiddish would sound pretty odd though if the'Ayin were pronounced properly
instead of being used as an 'e'!

i bought a cheap PC - Intel Celeron processor 2.54GHz. i don't believe in
spending a lot on hardware.

the PC cost R1895. the extra 1GB cost R920. total R2815.

a good graphics card could cost more than that total. it depends on what i
get. i'll probably get an NVidia GeForce FX6800 with either 128 or 256MB.

onboard graphics...

I remember the days of Intel "Extreme" graphics. No hardware Transform
and Lighting. Intel thought it wasn't necessary since the CPU could do
it. The only thing extreme about that chipset is the game lag from
dynamic lighting, even with a 2 GHz CPU. An upgrade to a sub-modest
GeForce4 MX almost made me piss myself. But one must endure what they
have until they can get something better.

it's a whitebox. i got it from my "wholesaler".

it's a damn side faster than my old PIII 800 MHz with only 128MB of RAM.

there's absolutely no point spending a premium on hardware. even google
knows that. they run their entire business on el cheapo no name brand PCs in
massive clusters. each day at least 1000 of them fail and are hot swopped out.

Time is money and money is time, and a lot of businesses and individuals
could be making more money doing something else, so it's cheaper then to
have a professional shop put computers together for you. Even though it
was probably a lot of fun to build and maintain steam locomotives in the
19th century, men like Jacob Schiff and William Vanderbilt were a lot
better off paying others to do that for them, saving /way/ more than 66%
in the bargain, more like 666%.

actually you're the idiot. any stupid mutherfukker, such as your sad self,
who makes an international call to another Usenet user for the purpose of
calling them names on the phone is the ultimate example of what a fucking
arsehole is.

i'm happy with my new PC. it is irrelevant to me what you think.

>Aside from Alienware, how many brand name computers are worth paying a
>premium for?

alienware is not worth paying for either.

i buy the cheapest hardware that will do the job and only the job. no extra
frills.

i'm willing to pay for a new AGP VGA card, so that i can play aoe iii
without the pc crawling to a halt whenever a naval battle occurs, but only
for what i need. if i only need 128MB, i will not get a 256MB card.

hardware is not an investment. it is an expense only, and a grudge purchase
at that.

it's like petrol, which is the best example of a grudge purchase. no one
wants petrol for petrol's sakes. but we have to buy it if we want to
transport ourselves and our goods around.

whatever i spend on hardware today could be better spent on better cheaper
hardware in a mere few month's time.

10 years ago, i spent R1650 to purchase 16MB of RAM. This month I spent R920
to purchase 1GB of DDR memory. that's 115 times cheaper (pro-rata) for the
same quantity of memory, without factoring in the speed advances.

i'm completely convinced that in another 10 years time, i will spent perhaps
R1500 (that amount in 10 years time) for a PC that comes standard with 2GB
of RAM, 512GB hard drive, processor that is at least 5 times faster
(probably a dual core or more), and a graphics card which makes today's VGA
adaptors look like they are stone age tools.

i don't think DVD writers will still be manufactured. everything will be
distributed via the Internet, USB memory sticks or some equivalent

i spent under R3000 to get a new PC recently. in Feb 1994 i paid R4400 for a
piece of crap (AMD 486 DLC clone). a real piece of crap. it had only 4MB of
RAM, 100MB hard drive. i wanted to run Win NT, so i purchased an extra 16MB
of RAM for it.

ultimately, i junked that PC within a year to get a Pentium 120MHz which ran
NT much better.

i skipped right over Pentium IIs. never owned one.

the Pentium III 800Mhz, 128MB that I got in Jan 2001 for R8000 was never
good. the supplier i purchased it from (SDD) went bang soon afterwards. it
would not run Win2000 or XP without freezing up. caps on the motherboard
popped. it got progressively slower over time until it became functionally
unuseable. while it was still under warranty (before the supplier went belly
up), it was attended to and the techs could not give me a PC which worked
with Win2000 or XP.

i had other much better uses for the R3000 i spent recently. i didn't want
to have to spend it on a computer.

when you purchase a TV or a fridge or a microwave oven, you spend about
R2000 on average for each one and they will last you at least 10 years,
often much longer.

i spent over R8000 under 5 years ago for a PC, and it is now a very
expensive coaster. the only parts of it i continue to use are its 20GB hard
drive and its monitor (which needs repairing).

i am done with all this fucking upgrading. it's not sexy anymore. i didn't
get anything soooo much better that the R3000 expense was justified. i'm
running XP now. big deal. i use my applications much more than i use the OS.
they ran exactly the same way - no wonderful extra sexy features.

Windows XP itself is not so wonderfully wonderful that upgrading from
Win98SE is compelling. who gives a fuck really about an OS? i'm done wowing
over new expensive bullshit software and hardware. that's all fucking
bollocks.

my new system runs fast, just like my old PIII used to back in Jan 2001. it
ran wonderfully fast when i first got it. back then, though, i didn't have
to lay out extra cash for a sexy graphics card so i could appreciate a new
game. now i have to spend over R1000 just to run a R270 game. that sux.

when you stop to think and analyse the whole situation, you just realise
what fucking madness it all is.

i'm supposed to be so fucking impressed that i spent "ONLY" R3000 for a
system that so much more super fucking duper than i got 10 years ago, but
what fucking for?

it's still not even close to the appliance model, where you spend under
R2000 (some even under R1000) for something which lasts you at least 10
years, probably longer.

the upgrade from 16bit Windows to 32bit Windows was the one which was a huge
leap. WinXP does run a whole lot better than Win98SE did, but it also
consumes a huge amount of system resources.

Before I even get any program started, 220MB is consumed. Right now Windows
Task Manager informs me that 400MB is in use.

what's up with that shit?

And you can never earn money the same as when you're buying...
i.e.... if you take the extra hour or ten to haggle over a price
reduction of between $1000 to $100,000 on a purchase or contract
for services... you can "save" between $500 to $10,000 'per hour'

or on the other hand... if it's a hobby or interest that results
in a saving when building a PC rather than buying a crappy 'white
box' (which you would only buy if $ were critical... or you were
'pig ignorant')... then the saving is only a bonus.
