I read a great book on the heraldry of
South Africa (can't remember author or title), but he says that the Dutch
system of heraldry, which is one of free assumption, has greatly
influenced South Africa's system, and would account for legal protection
without prohibiting assumed arms.

By the way, do you know anything about a project in a South African
university to generate a computer program to somehow store heraldry (the
blazons, I think) in some sort of database? I read about it in a
Canadian Heraldry publication, but have heard nothing since.
