I imagine they're serious about it because of the security measures at
Rideau Hall (a nice place, see
http://www.canadascapital.gc.ca/attractions/official_residences/rideauhall_e.html);
anyone to have access has to be vetted. The RCMP and CSIS would do a
background check, and an otherwise successful applicant could be
rejected for bona fide security reasons.

Frankly, if I had the experience and skills they want, that salary
would be a pittance.

Iamgine what the London heralds think on their princely salary of 17.80
ukp per annum <http://www.college-of-arms.gov.uk/about/4.htm>.

Perhaps the value of the post is to have it on your résumé so you can then
hang out your shingle and do *very* expensive private commissions.

I wasn't able to access the sites for the full job posting or the CoH salary
scale, but I'm guessing that the job isn't full-time, or at least that it
allows moon-lighting to pick up a few loonies (sounds like trolling for dates
in a clown bar :)

Seeing heraldic positions advertised like vacancies for mail-carriers is a bit
unsettling, but IIRC the Scots did the same after the last Lyon announced his
retirement. From my vantage point of 30+ years in the civil service (US, but
I doubt there's that much difference) the short posting strongly suggests that
they have someone in mind but can't just hire him/her without the formalities
of an open announcement. Or, possibly they've already done extensive informal
"outreach" to let potentially qualified applicants know its coming up, prior to
the official posting. Either way, based on the generally high quality of
Canadian heraldic art, they should get a good one IF the low salary isn't a
turn-off. Maybe "Starving-in-a-garret" Pursuivant looking for a small
promotion?
