I recently purchased an Russian SKS-56. The rear sights are odd to me. I
understand how it moves up and raises the sight but what are the numbers on
it? The manual says:

The rear sight is a open notch type which is adjustable from 100
meters to 1000 meters
(110 to 1100 yards). There is also an all purpose "battle" setting
on the sight ladder, set
for 300 meters (330 yards). This is attained by moving the
elevation slide to the rear of
the ladder as far as it will go.

There are 11 steps on my elevation bar. The first step being all the way at
the rear of the sight, Which
by the above statement says its set for 330 yards.

What is the break down in yardage by number of steps? Considering that
theres eleven steps and 330
is its maximum then sight would begin at 330 click 300 click 270 click 240
ect ect. Is this correct?

Can this gun be reliable at 330 yards? Shooting what? If deer at 100-150
yards then varmit for another
180 yards?

I would like to take it apart and sand the stock down putting a nicer
finish on it. Will I devalue it by sanding all the stampings? What kind of
wood will I find underneath?

Thanks

The numbers don't correspond to ANYTHING. They are merely there for your
reference. Everyone holds the gun a different way, and it is up to the
owner to determine what notch setting he needs to click into to hit at a
certain distance. The manual indicates the gun is accurate between 100-800
yards using this ladder-sight, but I use mine all the way down and get
good accuracy even at 50 yards. At 100 yards, I have to use the 1st notch
away from fully lowered. My range doesn't have anything further than 100
yards, so I haven't tried out any other settings.

Cough, cough, sputter, sputter. And I thought "1" was for 100 meters, "2"
was for 200 meters ect.

CheeseWhiz !
The question was morbid enough but this answer is totally whacked,
gentlemen.
1 is for 100 meter, 2 is for 200m, etc. YES, one click per 100 meters.
If you would turn the gun and examine the SIDE of the rear sight, you
will
notice that the rear of the ramp is of approximate height as click marked
#3
and higher than that at #1 or #2. The vertical trajectory IS calibratable
through the adjustment of the front sight. The rear most click,
the BATTLE setting, is a "slam it back and start shooting" position.
If you calibrate the sight at 200 meters, the trajectory will be
*roughly*
+3" at 100m and -13" at 300m. And, if your eyes are good enough at that
range,
the round is effective out pass 800m.

Thaks for playing.
