There's a mention on the TV show The West Wing of a rifle built
specially for the Secret Service called the J-A-R, for Just Another
Rifle: Does anyone know if this is for real?

As much as the mate and I enjoy the show and are often surprised at
the level of research put into it....this one seems to be a fanciful
creation.

Here's the line from the script....

C.J.
The Secret Service Agents carry a weapon called a .357 sig-hauer. The
agents on the roof
shot the two men with .726 caliber rifles that are referred to as JAR,
which believe it
or not, stands for "Just Another Rifle". They are made specifically
and exclusively for
the Secret Service.

THE WEST WING
“IN THE SHADOW OF TWO GUNMEN PART 2”
WRITTEN BY: AARON SORKIN
DIRECTED BY: THOMAS SCHLAMME
Original Air Date: October 4, 2000
****

The only references to this weapon I can find are from various WW fan
sites and spinoff stories. There is also a role playing game set in a
post apocolypse timeframe that uses this same weapon.

The rifle is a JAR 726 fires a round .375 Calibre Magnum

Also some discussion on it from the http://talk.shooters.com
website before it folded, dated a few months after the episode aired.

As can be seen in the uncharacteristic sloppyness in the script
referring to the weapons, I don't think Aaron is much of a gun person
or has any close friends that are. Which, given his recreational
activies is probally for the better. I'm thinking he pulled the info
from the game.

Below is the game weapon info....

****
United States Secret Service JAR 726
Caliber: .375 Calibre Magnum
E-Factor = 20 / Muzzle Velocity: 2670 fps
Weight (Empty): 3.22 kg
Eff Range: 400m
Max Range: 2653m
Type of Fire: Single Shot Bolt Action
Rate of Fire: 15 RPM
Feed Device: 8 Round Tubular Magazine
Feed Device Wt: 0.45 kg
Basic Load:
Load Wt: 1.4 Kg
Total Wt: 4.62 Kg

A unique weapon, the JAR (which stands for Just Another Rifle) is
exclusive to the United States Secret Service and was used in the
performance of Executive Security Protection duties. How such a weapon
came to be in the hands of a band of post-holocaust cannibals is a
mystery that the H Group Teams have not yet discovered.

P.S. Here's an interesting article I stumbled across during my
reseach. Civies beating the snipers... :)

Sounds like fanciful, ignorant scriptwriting. The USSS uses
counter-sniper rifles in 300 Win Mag. They're built on Rem 700 actions
by the USSS armorer. They are heavy!! I wouldn't want to carry one for
very long.
