Read some discussion awhile back that the Desert Eagle can fire multiple
calibers with swapping of the barrel, is this true ? Might be looking a the
.44 Desert Eagle but would want to fire .357 if it's as simple as switching
out the barrel.

The newer models are bult modularly, so you can do that. Shooting .41
magnum, .44 magnum, .5 AE, and possibly .44 corbon requires nothing but
changing a barrel. Shooting .357 requires changing the barrel, bolt, and
recoil spring.

The Desert Eagle MK XIX .44mag and .50AE use the same bolt assembly and
recoil springs, just swap out the barrel and the magazine. The .357
needs a different bolt assembly and recoil springs as well. You can get
a kit that includes all three calibers with 6 and 10 inch barrels.

The Desert Eagle is a great gun and the interchangeable barrels add enormous flexibility
and enjoyment to the platform. The only problem is actually *buying* a barrel from Magnum
Research. I have the .50AE and .44Mag barrels. I ordered a 6" .357Mag barrel and bolt in
January 1999. Every three months I call them to check on my order and each time they tell
me that my barrel and bolt will be in "at the end of the month" (I'm not kidding - that is
exactly what I have been told every time I have called about my order for the past two
years).

Customer service issues aside, the Desert Eagle is a lot of fun and it will be well worth
the wait (though I'm not sure I will continue my collection to the 10" barrels).

A little advice from someone who has been down this road... If you plan to buy the .50AE
barrel I strongly recommend you reload for it. The only commercially available .50AE ammo
is intended for hunting. It is *very* stout. You won't want to shoot more than a few
rounds of this stuff at a time due to the excessive cost and wear-and-tear (on you, not so
much the gun). By reloading you can get the cost down and shoot something approaching a
"plinker" in .50AE. There is nothing mild about any .50AE loading but a reduced load will
let you enjoy shooting 20 rounds or so without getting beat to pieces.

It is not that simple.

I have three calibers .50 AE, .44 Mag, .357 Mag.

Here is the run down.

..50 AE <-> .44 Mag, swap barrel and magazine = 5 seconds.

..50 AE or .44 Mag <-> .357 Mag swap, barrel, magazine and bolt. = 45
seconds.

You are looking at about $550 US for a .357 kit. $339 for barrel, $139 for
bold and $45 a mag.

if you are converting .50 AE <-> .44 Mag it is just price of the barrel and
mags, the bolt is the same.

I got my .357 kit with a "slightly used" meaning no wear marks of any kind
on the barrel and a brand new
bolt and a "slightly used" mag for $325 on Ebay.

No spring is needed! It shoots just fine with the existing spring Mark XIX.

Nope, Magnum Research is the only source for parts except for mags!

With the Mark XIX you dont have to change the spring anymore!
