I'm curious what others think about the Marlin 25MN Bolt Action
in 22 Mag. My local dealer is selling this for ~$129 usd. This
seems to me like a fair price. Let me know what opinions you may
have about this gun. I would also be appreciative to know what
some suggested loads would be for small varminting, accuracy, etc..

Thanks in advance,

#Mine is the 25m takedown model. It seems to like Winchester FMJ loads the
best, and Winchester Hollow points in that order. If you can restrict
yourself to head shots either one is good out of the short 16 1/2 in barrel
of the takedown for anything up to coyote at 100+ yds. Hollow point loads
for body shots.

Neil,

Around here (Arkansas) the Marlin bolt action .22 Magnum rifle is almost a
"staple item" in many hunters' collections. The way our game laws work,
there are many "fur-bearers" and varmints which can only be hunted with a
shotgun or with a rimfire rifle - and of course .22 magnum works a lot
better than .22 LR for many "bigger than small" species. In, I'd estimate
75% of the .22 magnums I've seen in use (and in people's gun racks), the
rifle is a Marlin! Of course, part of the reason for that is that Wal-Mart
sells them... but from talking to people, and shooting some of these rifles
as well as other .22 Magnum rifles, the main reason for the Marlin's
popularity is that it is *accurate*, reliable, and ergonomically efficient
(handles like a "full-sized" rifle not a "kids toy").

I'd say $129 for a used one in good condition is a very good price. Around
here, you rarely see them selling "used" w/o at least a scope, sling and
other accessories, and then the price hovers around $175+. I have no
clue what the "Blue Book" says these guns are worth - but to hunters in
Arkansas, they are apparently worth quite a bit!

Good luck,
Ben
