According to "One Shot-One Kill" by Sasser & Roberts, Carlos Hathcock used
a Winchester Model 70 with scope, always carrying 84 Match Grade 30.06 when
on assignment. My question is: What grain bullet did he use and what power
scope? Also, did he every use a Remington 700? Any information is greatly
appreciated. Any suggestions of other significant books on the history of
American snipers ?

He used factory ammo (military issue, that is) of the period. In "Marine
Sniper: 93 Confirmed Kills" by Charles Henderson (which you should read, since
you asked about books), there is a reference to Carlos making one of his kills
with a 168-grain bullet. However, referring to page 236 of the book, Carlos
used various equipment (scopes and rifles). He selected rifles "like a golfer
selects clubs" -- to include a Winchester Model 70, Lyman 8x scope, and
180-grain 7.62x63mm (.30-06 Springfield) ammunition. Primarily, during his
first tour he used a Winchester with a 10x Unertl and a Remington during his
second. Redfield 3-9x scopes were the issued optics for the Remington, popular
at the time for their rangefinding capability.

There are too many books to list, of those you request, but a search at
http://www.amazon.com or http://www.dogpile.com for words like "sniper books"
and/or "sniper rifle books" should get you started.

Sure, try "Inside the Crosshairs: Snipers in Vietnam" by Michael Lee
Lanning. Lanning is a former Lt. Col. in the Army, and his book is
very well researched and definative. He includes a history of US
sniping from the Civil war onwards. Book is published by the
Ballantine Publishing Group and is in paperback.

Hi Ed,
During his 1st tour in Nam, Carlos used a Pre-64 Winchester 30-06,
topped with a 8X Unertl Target Scope. He shot Lake City Match Ammo, 173 grain
FMJ. During his 2nd tour Carlos used a Remington 40x built into a sniping
rifle, chambered in 7.62 NATO, topped with a 3-9x Variable Redfield. He is said
to have liked the Remington very much.

There are a whole bunch of good books on sniping. Peter Sernich wrote some
Books by Peter Sernich are

The Complete Book of US Sniping
The One-Round War (USMC Scout-Snipers in Vietnam)
The Long Range War: Sniping in Vietnam (covers Army Sniping program)
US Marine Corps Scout-Sniper: World War II and Korea
The German Sniper: 1914 - 1945

Other good books are:
Dear Mom: A snipers Diary by J.T. Ward
A Rifleman went to War by H.W. Mc Bride (an American who sniped for the
Canadians during WW I)
Marine Sniper by Charles Henderson (a chronicle on Carlos Hatcock)

Inside the Crosshairs: Snipers in Vietnam by Michael Lee Lanning

Other sniping books:
With British Snipers to the Reich by Captain C. Shore
A sniper in the Arizona by John J. Culbertson (a sniper who didn't do much
sniping but saw a lot of action as a regular soldier)

Death from Afar (Vol.s 1 through 4) - I forgot who wrote these..
Technical Books:
The Ultimate Sniper by Maj. John Plaster
USMC Scout Sniper hand book
Combat loads for the Sniper Rifle by Ralph Avery

That should keep you busy!

He used 173 gr FMJ boatails in the match loads.I believe the Winchester had
an 8 power Unertl scope. The Rem 700 m40 rifle I think was not in use by the
marines while Carlos was serving in Vietnam, though it was shortly there
after....

if you're really interested, you could call Southern GunWorks in VA at
757-934-1423. ask for Richard Carroll, Mr. Hathcock's business manager and i'm
sure he could answer any questions.

Both the .30-06 and 7.62 NATO Match grade rounds used 173 gr boat tail
FMJ's. Carlos used both during his tours in Vietnam, first the pre-64 Win.
.30-06 then the Rem. M40 7.62 NATO.

God Bless him, we Marines miss him very much, Semper Fi Whitefeather!
P.S. Carlos is now SNCOIC of God's Rifle Range.
