I have a pistol of the WWII era that was given to me. It is, according
to the markings on the slide, the following: P Beretta-Cal 9 Corto-M934
(or M834,cannot tell for sure)-Brevettata Gardone V.T. 1942 X X . My
question is what size ammunition does this gun use ? If anyone is
familiar with this handgun I would appreciate your help. Thanks.

I know nothing about the weapon but 9mm Corto is the .380 ACP.

Perhaps there is an Italian speaker out there... does "corto" mean
"short", like "kurz" in German?

That would be .380 ACP (9mm short or "Corto"

You have a Model 1934 Beretta semi-auto pistol, standard issue for the Italian
Army in WW2. The Model 1934 Beretta was always chambered in 9mm Corto, which
is identical to the round we know as .380 ACP or 9mm short. You will be able
to find this round in any local store.

For the linguists amist us "corto" is the Italian equivalent of "short".

Yes, it is a Beretta 1934. The XX is the roman numeral 20, for the 20th year
of fascist regime (since mussolini came to power, in 1922). The caliber is
.380 as previously mentioned. "Corto" does mean "short" in italian. This is
the pistol that made Beretta pistols famous in this country. It is extremely
simple and rugged. If it is in reasonable condition (check with a gunsmith
etc....) it is very reliable and tough. If you have any questions about it let
me know, I am a big fan of this particular gun..

I have one of these too, with army markings but it is factory nickle. Any idea
what that is all about? Did the Italian army nickle plate their 1934s?
