I have a new model Colt Detective Special, 2". .38 special. This is
the one that comes with the rubber wrap-around grip from Colt. I just saw a
holster advertised that knocks my socks off, but can't tell if it fits my gun.
The ad says "J-frame revolvers with or without hammer". Going thru the books,
I see both Colt and S&W make "J-frames". Is this an industry standard for
sizing, or does each manufacturer have his own system? And, most importantly,
will a "J-frame" holster accept my Colt?

Short answer: No and No.
There is no standard nomenclature for frame sizes; the S&W "J" frame is
a small 5-shot model, while the Colt "J" frame is a large 6-shot gun
(approximately the size as a S&W 686, which they call an "L" frame.)
Colt refers to the Detective Special as a "D" frame, which is closer is
size to a S&W "K" frame, but not quite. Confused yet?
Bottom line: a holster to fit the S&W 5-round J frames will not fit a
Colt 6-shot "D" frame.
