I guess I am a product of the American system. I want the biggest, baddest,
fastest, most powerfull of what ever it is we are talking about. I have always
wanted a .460 Weatherby, but my pockets were never deep enough to handle a new
rifle with the Weatherby name on it. I thought that the best I would be able
to do is a rifle rechambered to that caliber. The simplest soloution to the
problem seems to be to rechamber a Ruger # 1 in .458 Win Mag to .460 Weatherby.
Has anyone out there done this? The dimensions of the two cartridges aren't
so different that it should be out of the question. The only complication that I
see is the extractor, and it is simple enough design, that sucessful
modifications should be able to be made. From what I can tell, if I limit the
.460 conversion to standard .460 pressure level loads, the action and barrel
should be able to handle it. Anyone out there have an opinion? Thanks for the
feed back.

You have a good question here. One that I posed two years ago to this
same forum. I am a Weatherby Fanatic (proper noun). I have Mark V
rifles chambered in all the calibers, ammo and loading equipment to go
with them. I ran across a very nice, slightly used Ruger No. 1
chambered for the .416 Rigby cartridge. I have always been told that
the 378, 416 and 460 cartridges were based off of the Rigby round,
except for the rounded shoulder/neck area and the belt at the bottom. I
asked this group what would be needed to rechamber for the Weatherby
round (it seemed easty to me, by making room for the belt and the
contour of the shoudler).

Well, to make a long story short, it appeared that I would be far
better-off just buying another Mark V Weatherby, rather than paying a
gunsmith to rechamber the Ruger to accept the Weatherby cartridge. I
would guess that rechambering from the .458 to the .460 would be just as
expensive.

You only live once...go out and buy that Weatherby. While you are at
it, check out this scan...

You don't mention whether or not you have ever fired even the .458 Winchester, let
alone from the Ruger #1. But, if you are truly bored with the performance the
Winchester round offers you, a more practical rechambering job would be deepening
the chamber of the #1 to accept the .458 Lott, which gives you enough boiler room
to move the standard 500 grain bullet another 200-300 faster. As the chamber is
simply deeper and these magnums headspace on their belt you can still make
emergency use the more common .458 Winchester should you need to reprovision
somewhere A-Square cannot "Next Day Air" you some spare Lott ammo. Good luck.
