Can any one suggest an information source for an I talian gunmaker of
perhaps 120 years ago?

I'm interested to find info on G La Porti, maker of double barrel
cartridge pistols.

I tried G. LaPorti, double barrel cartrige pistols, etc. on Google
and didn't find anything. But I'm going to follow this thread because
I find it very interesting. I'm sure someone in this NG will have an
answer - I hope.

Probably your only chance would be to find a book that lists Italian
gunmakers, not sure one exists. I've seen collectors' books listing
English, Irish, Scottish, German and French gunmakers, just not
Italian. Given the timeframe, this would probably be a small maker
doing hand-crafted items, not a large outfit like Beretta. So
production probably wasn't all that large. If you could localize it a
little better, town or guild records might be able to be searched,
depending on how much effort you wanted to put into it.

of interest in firearms.
Ask at it.hobby.armi or it.hobby.armi.moderato

With the absence of anyone knowing him, including one of the regular Italian
contributors here, I am curious why you think he exists. Do you have some
document mentioning him? Is there some marking on an old pistol you have?
Is it possible you are misreading some proof mark or other engraving?
Perhaps you could post some pictures, including a closeup of the markings.
The mystery here is intriguing. I love a mystery.

As I posted originally, I'm asking about an Italian maker of double
pistols of the 1890 era, like, 120 years ago. I doubt he still
exists. The pistol in question carries just what is indicated: G.
LaPorti. Brazilians where I got this relic all indicate it was
Italian. I wish I knew more. It's a mystery I'd like to know more
about.
Thanks for your interest, folks.

Seeing as Brazil was colonised by the Portuguese and in fact Brazil still
uses that language is it possible your pistol could be of Portuguese origin?

after 1870 a lot of Italians emigrated in south America, Argentina but also
Brasil (Rossi , of the brazilian revolver gunmaker, is the most common
Italian name) perhaps that an armourer emigrated in Brasil or Argentina and
make in loco his guns.
in 1890 circa in Europe and Italy doble barreled pistols isn't too common,
belgina spanish and italian production was directed to make a lot of oinfire
or small caliber central fire revolvers, like so-called velodog, about 9mm
11mm pinfire or 8mm 7,65mm central fire, whit some digression in largers
calibers like 10,4 Italian ordnance or such european calibers

in Italia at the time, was a lot of small gunmakers, in Brescia's area, but
the name La Porti, suggest a southern origin....mostly of them was
assemblator (? correct english?) of barrels and triggermeccanism at their
receivers, that are made by specialized Masters

This is turning into a great mystery. Could you please take some pictures
of the whole gun and some closeups of the markings and post them for us?
That might make the search more productive.
Thanks.
