A friend of mine inherited his Dad's Winchester Model 69 .22 many
years ago. He hasn't fired it since, but it is in remarkably good
shape considering that it hasn't been cleaned or oiled in the last 20
years (no rust, etc).
The markings on the barrel are:
Winchester
Model 69 .22 Short
No serial number
The rifle has what appears to be factory peep sights. The only problem
is that he does not have a magazine for the rifle. I don't know much
about these, but after doing a little Google searching it appears that
these were made to fire both 22LR and 22 Short. If that *is* correct,
it would appear that Winchester made both .22LR and .22 Short
magazines, right?
Most importantly, if anyone has a line on where to find a magazine for
this rifle, it would be much appreciated (I checked ebay w/no luck).
Thanks

Yes, there is a .22 magazine available but it's been 40 years since I've
seen one. I've got several 5 shot magazines and 2 10 shot magazines for
the model 69 but no .22 short magazines...
If he's at all interested in selling it (which would be a really bad
idea) I'd like a chance to bid on it.
If you can't find a magazine let me know and I'll be willing to sell you
one of my 5 shot mags. You can reach me at jammeter at cablespeed dot
com...

Indeed, one for longs, one for shorts. Long type fits 4 different models, not
to bad. Short is gonna hurt.

Thanks for the info and the offer to sell a magazine. I'm forwarding
all of this info to my friend. He was happy to hear the good comments
about the rifle. He isn't in the market to sell it, though -- since it
was his (deceased) father's rifle there is some emotional attachment.
I told him he needs to take care of it though, not just let it sit un-
oiled in a corner.
The weird thing is that the barrel is only marked "Short". I'll try to
snap a photo later today and forward it to you.
Thanks again,
Ted
Frank (& everyone else)-
Thanks for the info. I've passed those links along to my friend, and
advised him to buy at least one of each.
Cheers,
Ted
The 69A will shoot .22 Long, Long Rifle and Short but I've only used
Long Rifle so I don't know about the shorter rounds in the magazine. I
doubt they would fit, through. As mentioned above, they made 5 and ten
round magazines. I have several of each. I've seen them at gun shows
and I will buy one whenever I see it. I think they are available on
the internet.
By the way, it's been mentioned in various articles that I've seen on
the internet that the only difference between the Model 69 and the 69A
was that the 69 cocks on closing and 69A cocks on opening the bolt.
I've checked mine carefully after I read that and I'm fairly certain
that my 69A only cocks on closing the bolt. Other than that issue, I
thnik the rifles are very much the same.
I have the 2009 Winchester catalog and they show the .22 Wildcat. and
the .22 Wildcat Target/Varmint. The magazines they show look similar
to the 69A. I wonder if they would fit?
Happy Trails!

You can always try to drop a 22LR into the chamber and see if it will
go. If it doesn't then it may be chambered only for 22 shorts.

I have the large and small "The Winchester Book" -
They are both signed and 1/1000 but the bad news is this was done
several years so there are a number of them out...
The Model 69 Page 250 small book.
Expensive target rifles and lower priced single shots were already
in the Winchester line. A demand was seen for a reasonably priced repeater,
so the company developed and introduced the Model 69 by 1935.
A detachable box magazine (or clip) was a feature of the model 69. Five
shot magazines were standard; ten shot or single loader magazines were
offered as an extra. Each gun was boxed with one short and one long rifle
magazine, since the various cartridge lengths would not operate in the same
magazine. This rifle was listed at a weight of five pounds.
Peep sights were comparatively popular for the model 69. Target and match
rifles had receiver sights as standard and no rear sight seat was milled in the
barrel. Ten shot magazines, as "seen here", were and extra. [ short curving
forward clip]

Perhaps you can determine by the text which model you have. All three had
Short, Long and Long Rifle ability.

I need to add that I'm not certian about the cocking on the Model 69A.
Perhaps someone such as a gunsmith who has worked on them might
comment here.
It's sure a nice rifle, though, regardless of how it cocks. LOL.
I personally wouldn't bother with the 22 short magazine unless you
confirm that the rifle won't chamber 22lr. CCI 22 CB Long Caps will
feed from a 22lr magazine and have similar ballistics to the 22 short.

On my 69A, the Firing Pin Spring is put under tension when the Bolt
is Opened, when the Bolt is Closed, It is held in tension by the Sear.
When the Trigger is pulled, the Sear releases the Firing Spring
tension, and thus causes the Firing Pin to move forward and strike
the the Rim of the Cartridge.
Same basic Operation as MY Model 52, only mechanically not the same.

Yeah, after a close look again, I'm sure that you are correct. Thanks
for reminding me.
