Hello,

I just picked up a .58 caliber H & R Huntsman muzzle loader and need
load sata for it. I KNOW ABOUT THE PROBLEM WITH THE BREECH PLUG. I
have access to a maching shop and will have it pinned. I just need
load data. What I find interesting about this gun is that whith a
standard load the projectile is just about subsonic whith plenty of
energy to take a deer within the ranges most deer are seen up here in
NH. A fairly quiet gun would be usful in some situations I hunt in up
here.

What problem with the breechplug? I ran one for a few years back in
the 1970's and had no troubles. The knock out plug made cleaning a
lot more convenient than the threaded plugs. Good hunting!

yrs without any issues.

The original run of the .58 has a pressed in breech plug, you can drive
it out from the muzzle. If you ram the ball or cleaning rod to hard the
breech plug gets knocked back and can come out when you pull the
trigger. H&R actually offered to weld them in, or they would pay to have
a smith do the work. Pinning will work but I prefer to have the breech
threaded and a new plug made. That allows you to remove it if needed.

Hummm...I cant remember if mine is threaded or pressed in. Ive not
fiddled with it in 5-8 yrs. Ill dig it out and check. Thanks!

Mine has (2) holes 180' apart..so Im assuming its a screw-in.
Sigh..Ive got Kroil in the barrel working on busting it loose. I dont
have/cant find (Im sure I had one) the proper wrench, so Ill be
making one on the lathe later today, using a pair of proper dowel pins
and wrench flats and a decent sized hole for a rod to unscrew it.
And mine is 45 caliber..not the .44 I remembered. Too many guns in the
vaults..and I never would have expected to ever say that.....(VBG)

If anyone needs any photos of the breech/plug etc..for any reason..I
can do extreme close-up digital photos.

Hey! Just found the wrench! Had a sudden thought and checked one of
the (unmarked..gotta fix that) bags hanging in my shop..and there it
is! Yay!!
The wrench pulled out that stainless steel plug with only a tiny
"huh!". So It is indeed threaded..and I put it up clean..whew!!

Thanks for bringing this up!!

Oh..one thing I do remember..the factory ramrod..that telescoping
piece of crap....anyone have any easy fixes to make them work properly
without folding up? Now I remember having to carry a second ramrod
with me to load it. (accurate as hell..but a pain to need a second
ramrod)
