Does anyone own a Remington 700 VLS in the .308 caliber?
Or is there a website I can visit to see the ballistics of this rifle
shooting
150 & 180 grain bullets. This rifle is supposed to be designed to give
varmit
accuracy results because of the 26 inch barrel that comes with it, but
what
bullet weight would that be?
I have a Winchester model 70, 30-06 with a 24 inch barrel.
It weighs 7 lbs. 4 oz. The Remington 700 VLS .308 caliber weighs 9 3/8
pounds.
I am interested in this gun because its weighs more & chambers a
smaller bullet
than my Winchester model 70.
I am trying to get a less recoil feel, but at the same time acheive
similar
bullet velocity
as my Winchester Model 70 30-06. I there a magazine article or
something that
shows
the ballistics of the Remington 700 VLS .308 caliber shooting 180
grain bullets
vs other
guns?
Below are links to both the guns I currently own, & the one I want to
possibly
want to purchase.

Hello
I now get the general idea as what to expect if I was to buy the
Remington 700 VLS in .308 caliber, in comparison to my existing
Winchester model 70 30-06.
After reading the subject: Remington 700 VLS shoots poorly in
rec.guns, message #12 in the thread shows the different rifle barrel
twist rates, plus the weight of bullets in grains to best match the
barrels.
Yes, I do believe this gun would mellow out the recoil a bit as
compared to my 30-06 because it will weigh a few pounds more.
I guess I shouldn't expect real accurate results with the heavier
bullets though as in 180 200 & 220 grain bullets. 150 grains of bullet
weight works for me!
Mabye I'll buy this gun in the weeks to come.

The heavy barrel accounts for the weight of the rifle. It is not
fluted.
I've fired a 700VS in .308 with Federal 168gr Gold Medel match ammo.
The recoil isn't bad at all. Shooting 20 rounds in a sitting should
be no problem at all.
If you want recoil, go with a 12ga pump and turkey loads or slugs.

#The 700 VLS has a heavy contour (bull) barrel in 1:10 for the .308
#Winchester. It should handle the 180gr bullet. I believe that is the
#upper limit for that twist.
