I can pick up an Interarms 458 Win Mag with laminate stock for $400 in
new condition (I wonder why....). My father and I have been really
into rifle shooting and are slowly working into the larger bores. We
really enjoy the 338 Win Mag and have used it out west. I have wanted
a 45-70 or 458 for a sometime, and the time may be now? I would use
this for plinking and possibly elk or buffalo.

What are everyones thoughts on the Interarms brand?? I know it is not
a Browning or Winchester or Sako, but is it a decent product for the
price of $400? No experience on this brand.

This will open up a can of worms, but what are the thoughts on the 458
Win Mag? Part of this purchase would be to just own one, and shoot
some less punishing reloads at targets. Hard to argue this round for
big game though(buffalo, Africa, bears). I know it would be too much
for elk or moose.

Interarms is an importer. They don't manufacture anything. In the past
Interarms have sold rifles made by Howa (fair), Mauser (excellent) and
others.

$400 for a slightly used .458 is not so unusual. There are many of
these rifles out there that are purchased, but once the owner shoots
them, they find that the caliber is too much for them. I have bought
dozens of .458 a gunshows and gunshops for relatively low prices that
have been fired a few times if at all. These big bore rifles are
specialized arms and not in high demand.

The .458 is a fantastic round if you like big bore shooting. It is far
easier to find ammo for this monster than for other big bores like the
.416 rigby or .460 Weatherby, and ammo is usually much cheaper, in the
range of $2 per round. You will want to hand load this cartridge if you
plan on doing a lot of shooting (unless you are rich and have a bionic
shoulder).

The .458 can be loaded down to a very pleasant .45-70 using appropriate
powders and 400 gn bullets. If you want to extract the maximum power
from the .458, you can rechamber to .458 Lott. This will allow you to
still shoot .458 win mag, but also the more powerful Lott, which is a
slightly longer case.

As an aside, I have used the .458 to take a bull elk, and using light
loads with cast bullets (I like LaserCast) as a deer rifle in heavy
brush.

Interarms is an international arms trader operating out of VA as I recall.
They have armed a lot of revolutions in their day. I don't think they make
anything but sell what others make. Keep looking for another makers mark.

Interarms recently imported rifles made by Howa in Japan. I believe
they went into bankruptcy a couple of years ago, and another firm took
over the importing of Howa rifles. Interarms imported a variety of
guns, but if the rifle is made by Howa, it is a quality gun. Howa made
the Smith & Wesson 1500 rifles and also made some guns for Browning in
Japan.

I'd want to know who made it, if I intended to use it on dangerous game
like the big bears or buffalo (or did you mean bison?). When hunting
these kinds of critters you want something that is completely reliable
so you shouldn't trust anything made by off the wall companies.

If you are going to hunt Bison, rather than buffalo, the 458 is a good
choice and, contrary to your statement, it's also good for moose and
even elk close in.

If you are recoil sensitive and don't reload you will find the 458
unpleasant to shoot.

Interarms based their large bore bolt actions on a commercial 98 Mauser
action made in Yugoslavia known as the Mark X. This is a great
workhorse rifle of decent quality. Has the large claw extractor, and
positive feeding that most dangerous game hunters desire. $400.00
sounds like a great price.

If it is a MarkX from Yugoslavia (Sarajavo sorry about spelling) you have a
piece of history there the plant where it was made was a smoking hole in the
summer of 96 as the Serbs blew it up to prevent the local Muslim population
of Bosnia a source of sniper rifles. The Bosnian people were using these to
shoot the artillery spotters, gun crews and Serb snipers. They were just a
little too effective so the Serbs blew it up. A form of gun control in a
way. They also took out the plant that used to make that great ammo from
there for same reason.

Have a read of what Ross Seyfried has to say about the .458 Win. Mag. in the
latest Rifle magazine. Then consider that for very little extra cash you can
have that gun rechambered for
..458 Lott which is a rather better cartridge. Then make your decision based
upon what you are likely to shoot with the rifle.
Not long ago I saw a fully suppressed short .458 Win Mag. the cartridge case
being only about 2 inches long. The owner assured me it was a very accurate
rifle and since he only uses it for target shooting for his own amusement
why not?

Thanks for all the feeback boyz!!! Alot of what was said reinforces
my original thoughts, as well as gives me a different perspective.

My responses based on the cartridge. My father and I have slowly
gotten braver (or stupider) in the fact that we have slowly been
moving up the caliber charts and enjoyed the abuse. My father had
recently got a .338 mag which I thought would be no fun to pull the
trigger. I noticed the recoil was of a differnt animal and really
love that round. We have kicked around the 375 H & H and the 45/70,
but the 458 would be great for us to load and a blast to shoot at
45/70 levels!!! Thanks for the input. I am excited to hear the use
on moose, elk, and bison (not sure about the deer, but I'm sure it
gets the job done!!!).

I also read the 458 Lott article in the American Rifleman. Damn that
looks like a punishing round, and it is still not near the 460
Weatherby!! The rechambering may be reasonable but the physical
therapy for the shoulder would be pricey!! I have a feeling the full
458 Win mag would put my curiousity in it's place.

Regarding the rifle, you really opened my eyes. I did not even
reconize the Interarms as a great firearm manufacturer, and now I know
they are an importer. I knew this wasn't a high quality rifle, but
would work for North America and shooting paper. The point about the
458 rifles being sold in "as new" or including a near full box of ammo
shows the power of the round and the buyers market on these big bores.
I would also consider investing a few more dollars in a rifle (and my
life!!) when going after cape buffalo. One poster caught my error.

This is a Mark X model. I heard this was a solid piece, but it still
has it's limitations.
