My grandson lives in Lacey, Washington and I would like to find out if
there are any places we can go to do some plicking. I am looking for
outdoor sites where we could setup some cans and bottles and shoot to
our hearts content.

He's almost 9 and it's time for Grandpa to take him out and teach him
some gun safty and shooting skills. Got him a Red Rider BB gun last
Christmas and he's a good shot with it. Now it's time to get him on a
22.

If you know of a site let me know at rcp...@worldnet.att.net.

Thanks for the help.

Take HY 101 to the Black Lake Exit and head south toward
the State Forest. I don't recall the name of the road you want to
turn off on, but there are several gravel pits out there that are
frequented by many (many many many shooters).

Follow Black Lake Blvd past Black Lake until you come to a T (it will have
changed it's name to 62nd Ave by then, but no matter). Turn left at the T
onto Delphi Road. Follow this until you make a right onto Waddell Creek Road
(watch for it -- easy to miss -- I'm positive that's the road). Follow
Waddell Creek Road for what seems like forever. It will climb up into
primeval forest, turning into a hard pack dirt road -- sometimes dipping
down before resuming the climb, with a "they'll never find you" drop off on
one side. Watch out for folks coming the other way -- the road *is* wide
enough, but doesn't look like it, and too many folks go too fast around
curves w/o bothering to look or move over for you. Eventually you will beak
out into daylight, with the road making a right bend, and on your left is a
small shooting area (pistol-length range, dirt backstop) but don't go there.
Continue on for about 1/4 mile (seems like a lot more than it is) and you
come to a quarry on your right. Place to park, place to shoot, high walls
that keep anything from getting out. Just watch where you set up your
targets and how close you are, as there are many rocks large enough to
produce ricochets (hearing & eye protection, as always).

My son.in.law & I only had someone else show up once in all the times we
used it. And don't blame us for any trash -- we picked up all the pieces we
could find of what we brought. Finding your brass among the gravel is "fun".

WA State Rifle & Pistol Assoc., http://www.wsrpa.org/ has a link to
ranges and clubs in Washington "AC."

Evergreen Sportsman's Club is south of Olympia, and is a pretty good
setup, although their pistol range was closed last I saw (last fall,
for Olympic Arms' "Phoenix Rising event).
