Can the 162 gr AP bullet (.308 dia) be made up safely into a 7.62x39mm
load? Lee's table goes up to 150 gr jacketed bullet for the 7.62x39
Russian shell. Is there a published load for this bullet? Any
opinions on what to do, since I have not found any economical AP rounds
for the 7.62? Thanks.

Between seating this very long bullet halfway to the base of the cartridge to
maintain acceptable overall length, and a maximum velocity (assuming pressures
acceptable in an SKS or AK) of perhaps 1700 fps., and the poor accuracy you
could expect from an undersized bullet that will not slug-up to fit the barrel,
and this seems like an exercise in futility. I understand that the performance
of military AP ammo in this caliber is decent, but this is the wrong projectile
in every way for this cartridge.
And, not to be snide, but what do you need armor-piercing ammunition for, in
the first place? The deer in you neighborhood wearing Second Chance vests?

One mans humble opinion...

#Can the 162 gr AP bullet (.308 dia) be made up safely into a 7.62x39mm load?<

yes it could however there are 2 problems involved with doing so

1) it would be illeagal
7.62x39 is considered a handgun caliber by BATF since there's
a few AR variant pistols around chambered in 7.62x39
thats the reason steel core 7.62 ammo is no longer imported

2)accuracy would suffer as the 7.62x39 bullet is nominally .311
in a cast plinking load you'd probably get an acceptable gas seal
on firing and get by
with a heavy jacketed military AP projectile like you propose
I believe you'd get quite a bit of gas leakage affecting accuracy

Wouldn't 7.62X39 penetrate a 2nd Chance vest any way? And the 2nd ammendment doesn't
say a thing about hunting.

It's illegal. ATF ruled that the 7.62x39 round is a "pistol" round,
after Olympic Arms came out with an AR-15 variant handgun in that
caliber (the OA-93). This is why the Chinese steel-core ammo was
banned from importation in 1994. If I recall correctly, the bullet
you are thinking of using has an all-steel core, and so it would be
a felony to make 7.62x39 ammunition with it.

Check the FAQ for more information. http://www.recguns.com/IIG1.html
Penalties aren't mentioned, but I think they're up to either five or
ten years in prison, with the possibility of large fines being imposed
on you in addition to the prison sentence. If you can navigate through
the ATF web site, you should be able to find them there.

Due to the TC pistols, how is it that .30-06 AP is legal anyway? Also,
why isn't SS109 considered armor piercing by ATF... (enough of a lead
core to be considered normal?)

If you really want to load AP just take some 150 gr. 7.62 x 54
Nagant and pull the bullets. They are all steel core and they are
the right diameter .311. Will

According to the BATF website, it is illegal for importers, distributors
and dealers to sell, but not for private individuals. Of course, there are
state laws that may differ.

i'm sure if we all went to the web sight we would see that only making the
bullets (projuctiles) is illegal
