Hi,

My new Norinco 54-1 Tokarev copy has an odd problem. When there is no
magazine loaded, the slide works properely. However when an empty magazine
is inserted, the slide locks on open once it is pulled back. I cannot engage
the slide release while the magazine is in the pistol. I can only
successfully engage the slide release once the magazine has been dropped. I
haven't tried a loaded magazine yet since I am not sure what the problem is.
Some people say that the slide on some pistols stays open on an empty
magazine but that it should not be the case for a Tokarev. Does anyone know
what the problem is?

Bren

I sounds like your pistol may be working properly.

Brendan, one problem is that you are not familiar with semiautomatic
pistols in general. I'm glad you've not yet hurt yourself,
manipulating a firearm when you haven't first studied up on it.

I can tell you that, from here, it sounds to me as though your pistol
is working 100% as it was designed to work. That said, you really
need to get a decent book about semiautomatic pistols and study it.

This might be a repercussion of a poorly fitted 'import retrofit'
trigger safety; however what you describe is exactly how I would expect
a functioning magazine/slide 'catch' to work; that's how the pistol
variant T54-1 does work AFAIK... When you subsequently insert a loaded
mag after dropping the empty, a tug on the slide rearward will then
allow forward slide travel and chambering. Loaded and unloaded mags
cause the slide to act differently; this is good by design; though
another more costly to make pistol design might allow you to close the
slide on an empty magazine, it's easy enough to end up with a closed
slide and empty mag installed if you wish...
