I've had a hell of a time finding this thing...

What I need is a firing pin for a "Western Field" M-842 .22 bolt rifle.
It was the store brand of one of those large department stores that I
really should remember the name of but don't - in short, a cheap
knock-off, but one which only has this small problem. The models have
been discontinued for some time, but the piece is far from being a
collector's item and as such nobody I talk to seems to know a damn
thing about it. I've tried every local gunsmith, and the general
consensus seems to be that they wouldn't know where to begin.

So am I stuck trying to machine something to as near correct size as I
can muster (especially hard since I have no such tools)? Or are the
local gunsmiths just not really trying?

Hi all:

According to Gun Parts Corp., this is the same as the Mossberg 346K. The
problem is that this rifle used 4 different firing pins at different times.
You'll have to get your old firing pin and compare it to the pictures in the
catalog.

Hope this helps,

Vern

According to the blue book your gun is a Mossberg 346K sold through
Montgomery Ward.

I am afraid you are not talking to qualified gunsmiths. An experienced
smith should have recognized that gun immediately, but if not, he still
should have reached for a greasy and dog-earred oldGun Parts Corp catalog,
and used the cross-over index to determine that the Western Field M-842 is
none other than the Mossberg346K.

Still not out of the woods. The Mossberg 346 used four different firing
pins, all with the same part number. Necessary to compare with pictures in
Gun Parts catalog. Problem is one is unavailble, and two are denoted as
having also appeared under different part numbers at various times.

But, at least you now know what your are looking for.

P.S. The department store was, and is, Montgomery Ward. The rifle is not a
cheap knockoff. It was a perfectly good Mossberg rifle that they marked as
a Wards gun (Western Field) for sale by Wards.

Montgomery Ward's Western Field Model 842 was the Mossberg M346K. The
Montgomery Ward Catalog 842 was the Mossberg M42M. Yours should be the
Mossberg 346K. They were made from 1958-1960. The 346K-A from 1960-1968.
Yours out to be a 346K. Try Gun Parts Corp. They ought to have any part
you need. If not it should still prove relatively easy to get a firing pin.

My Gun Parts catalog shows the 842 to be the same as the Mossberg
346K. They show 4 possible firing pins for that model. You could call
them at 914-679-5849, order the catalog, then look at the drawings of
the pins to see which looks right.

#"Western Field" M-842 .22 bolt rifle

According to Gun Parts Corp, it is a Mossberg346K

Get their catalog, as Mossberg used 3 different types of firing pins and you
will have to compare yours to the pictures.

You can order the catalog at: www.gunpartscorp.com
