Does anyone know if it's possible to get a working reproduction of a
Dreyes or Chassepot needle gun?

Yes, they are available from Germany - see

There are a lot of originals out there of the various Dreyse models,
the French modified most, if not all, of their Chassepots to fire
regular brass cartridges. Haven't seen repros of either, not that
many folks interested in recreating the Franco-Prussian War. Check
antique auction sites worldwide for Dreyse originals.

# the french don't want to recreate it because they got their a$$ whooped despite
# a numerical and logistical advantage. The germans dont want to because they've
# been brainwashed to forget that they are the best soilders in history.not the
# spartans not the romans not the japanese (they come close) not the Benduin not
# the russians but the Germans (obviouly including the swiss and austrians and
# germans living in french or polish occupied germany.)

# sorry, im easily sidetracked but if someone were to began production of deryse
# needle rifles that remained almost completely true to the original desi gn
# (hopefully solving the gas escape problem to reduce facial burnings) and were
# sold for 1200$ dollars or less, I would buy one tommorow.

# sidenote: Im also assuming that they wouldnt then charge outragouse ammount
# for the ammunition, cleaning rod, spare needles, etc.

The ammunition should be easy: make it yourself.

the post by rjpowers was actually written by me. the owner of the account is
my brother and when i hit reply to post i didn't realize he had left his
account logged in. i only write this because his and my opinion on Germany
and the soldiery of its people are not in sync.

After writing my post i did further research on the topic and found that while
the the french technically had a larger army a large amount of it was in their
colonies, Rome, or being held by bureaucratic procedures and as a result the
actual forces able to be deployed to the front numerically favored the Prussians
and their allies. This coupled with the supierer quality of the Prussian soldiers
and officers allowed them to overcome the superior weaponry of the French.

Also the war might not be much fun to reenact because of the huge role play
ed by artillery on both sides.

oh and about 91.3% of the Prussian victory has been accepted by a majority
of historians to be a direct result of the spiked head gear ratio between the
two armies. XD
