I was at some of the local gun shops the other day and I saw a Lorcin
9mm for $150 and a .380 for less than that. Is this a good defensive gun
to own? Does it have any known defects? Has anyone experienced any
jamming problems? How are its stocks, sights, and breakdown?

Thankyou.

WHATEVER YOU DO...DON'T BUY THE LORCIN!!!!

This is one of those guns that falls into the 'I can't afford
anything else/I'll throw it if it doesn't shoot' category.

These guns are made of pot-metals and are EXTREMELY cheap. While
they MAY function at the range, there's no telling what they will
do when you need them the most.

If you want to spend under $200.00 on a quality gun, look at the
Russian Makarov .380 or the FEG 9mm/.380's. The Makarov is one of
the most proven designs out there and is a real bargain. The FEG's
are made by an OLD Hungarian firm and are generally Browning Hi
Power copies (or Walther PPK copies). These are quite nice for the
money.

For another $100 you could have an EXCELLENT EAA Witness with a
lifetime warranty. These are Italian made from hard steels...very
accurate too.

Just don't make the mistake of buying a Lorcin. I'm sure you'll
regret it. It's not worth risking your (or your family's) safety.

Woe to you of earth and sea...for ye have just readeth the gospel.

I looked at some Lorcin pistols (just out of curiousity) at a show.
They remind me of those Stallard 9mm's that were out a while back
(another pistol made from "pot metal"). Against my advice, one of my
friends bought one of those. About the only ammo that would function
reliably was what I *think* was some Egyptian surplus machine gun ammo
(it appeared to be loaded pretty hot). I was always afraid this ammo
was going to blow the darned thing apart.

Goeth ye with the Makarov.

I have one. I even carry it. This falls under the heading of "I didn't
know what I was getting and now I'm stuck with it". It took 2-300 rounds
to break in to the point where it didn't stovepipe at least
once/magazine. The grip safety and manual safety have both broken since I
got the gun in July. I fixed the manual safety and pulled the grip
safety, which is wretched anyway. They're heavy, bulky, and prone to
break and/or malfunction. I didn't find out until later that you can get
ex-commie surplus Makarovs at gun shows for less.

In fairness, I should mention why I haven't thrown this thing in the
trash. It comes with a 13-round preban magazine. Once you get it broken
in and polish the ramp, the jams pretty much go away. At usual handgun
distances, 7 & 15 yards, it shoots as well as or better than I do.
Finally, most (99.9%) of defensive uses don't involve discharge -- just
scaring the crap out of the assailant. As you've noticed, Lorcins are
ugly with a capital Ugh, meaning that they'l work. If I had it to do
over, I'd go with a Makarov or other used milspec. Meanwhile, I'll carry
this thing until it breaks or they have a gun buyback for $150 cash or so.

I am going to have to agree with Jeff here. I owned a Lorcin .380 very
briefly about a year ago. I had nothing but trouble with it. I wouldn't
use any gun made by Lorcin for a paperweight, much less defense. Spend
the money. Its worth it for a GOOD gun.

Depends----how much do you want to pay for an ugly paperweight?

Actually, you could use any number of names here and still be correct.
Try Jennings/Bryco for instance. There are guns and cheap guns. Very
rarely are they the same article. :-)
